In my eyes, swearing is like underage drinking: it's only appealing when its forbidden. I feel as though if we didn't put such an emphasis on the words as being 'bad' and that children and adults should not use them, then less people WOULD use them unless they deemed it the only appropriate word to use to express the enormity of how they were feeling or to emphasize something that was bugging them, or something along those lines.
Where does that silly logic end. Stealing, assault, murder. Come on now.
I am in total agreement with horseartist. I get your argument, "they are only words". Yeah all words "are only words". But words mean things. "I hate you" is only three words but people you love wouldn't like it if you said that to them. Because despite the fact that they are words they carry a strong meaning. It is the same with curse words. Do I wish there weren't any, sure. But this is a society and if people want to go around cursing and making themselves look and sound like trash, fine I guess, but I don't want 13 year olds to hear it. Because when they say it in school after they see it on here, thier teacher and principal are not going to listen to the "it's just a word" argument that you taught them, or the "I hurt my toe and could think of no better word to describe my feelings at the moment" argument. These words are socially unacceptable and you may not like it, but that's how it is.
Aside from making you sound trashy and classless, they are offensive to some people. And on a forum for YOUTH, I think it is wholely appropriate and commendable for one of those youth to ask you to stop. Continue to stand up for yourself horseartist. You are doing a fine job.
Its only a word if your offended by it I can accept that, but the reason why these words are thought of to be bad is because they are normally used in anger against others which is wrong and should be stopped but when they are used as an exclamation such as d**n I just had something bad bad happen its not hurting anyone. And since 80% of communication is body language these words are used in anger and the body shows it. Of course if swearing makes you uncomfortable I think it is the duty of the people around you to try not to swear so you may be happy wherever you, but this doesn't mean that they should swear of swearing permanently because the choice is theirs. I hate it when my sister swears at me and I try to get her to stop because of the discomfort it causes me but when I'm with a friend who doesn't mind and were both having fun and joking around I don't mind if he trips for example and swears because I tackle him.

Ikki14Reed I HATE that email. It is really really easy to read it; I don't care what it says about smart people being able to read it. It's stupid.
I totally read the first line of that email (about how only smart people can read it) without noticing it was misspelled.
Interestingly enough, this may explain why it's possible (through grating) to read posts by Internet newbies who insist on misspellings, strange capitalization, abbreviation, and random numerical characters in their posts...

Horseartistgirl, you're really starting to be a whiny little brat. If the colorful language here on YouthNoise is such a big deal to you, go to a different website. This is a free site, no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to stay, you'll suffer no loses if you went to a Christian forum instead. You have absolutely no right to tell people how to speak. If there's anything I can't stand, it's bossy close-minded teenagers. Everyone has to deal with things they strongly dislike or are offended by. That's life. I don't see what makes you so special that you should be exempt from that.
I really wish my movie theatre played more than the mundane crap that appears to make money. I really want to see Penelope and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, but neither are at my local theatre. It's really quite bothersome.
You know, I remember being on this site day and night. Looking back, because I happened to search my username in the message boards, I sounded like a stupid, whiny kid, a stupid annoying one at that. How unbelievably embarassing. My how times have changed. Still love YN though. Ah, memories, memories...
I miss the old YN.

I hate unnecessary swearing in the movies and other forms of entertainment. There is a time when swearing can strengthen something, but needless swearing just for the sake of swearing is annoying. It's a lot like nudity to have nudity. It lends nothing, but rather, takes away.
There is nothing new going on in my life. Just getting through school right now and wishing I were in Europe and as cool as ICE.

No you don't have the right to judge me just as I will not judge you.
No, I don't have the right to judge you on everything but I do have the right to judge certain aspects of you character. I can judge that I should not be talking to you. I'm not judging you totally, and I don't think that you are a bad person, just that I find your way of speaking un-admirable. Oh, and I don't want you pity. And you can judge that I'm a very strong oppinioned 13 year old.

I'm making a forum on this subject, and our arguement can continue there, because LB doesn't seem to want it here.
FIRST DAY OF SPRING BREAK! HORRAY! MY FRIENDS AND I ARE PLANNING A BIKE RIDE/PICNIC TO A NEARBY FOREST PRESERVE! SO EXCITED! Get up a 7 AM, put together a lunch, meet at my house, head out, get the the preserve by 10 AM, eat at 12, bike for another to hours, head back, and go in the hottub! sounds like fun, huh? thought I would share, cuz I'M SO EXCITED!

I'm am very curious as to why both bushsupporter & horseartist (even though I responded to horseartist in a peacable manner) thought that it was a good idea to continue ranting in a very rude tone to both me & all others who share my oppinion. No you don't have the right to judge me just as I will not judge you. We disagree on this topic but that does not mean in anyway that either one of us is wrong. When I cussed earlier it was just in a sentence, I did NOT use it intentionally on anyone or because I was mad. I have a right to express myself the same as you do. I accept & understand your reasons for disliking that word but that does NOT mean that either of you have the right to tell me how to speak or behave. I will also ask you not to try to counsel me on morality. I know what true morality is. If I seem upset in this message it is only because you insisted on fighting about this rather than just leaving it alone. When I said "Let's just live & let live, cool?" I was trying to end the issue so that this board could go back to other topics, I was not asking you to change your views. I am sorry that this has gotten this far but I will not apologize for saying that word or speaking the way I wish to. If you want to judge me as "not the type of person I should and want you to be talking to" just because of one word or phrase then I pity you. With that mindset you are already saying within your heart that I am a bad human being & we will never have a good conversation together. If that be so then I pity you. Now that we're all done ranting lets just drop it & move onto a much more mentally stimulating topic.
New Topic: Who else plays World of Warcraft, & which faction do you play?
Since everyone seems intent on pointing out the fact that this is a youth forum, I'd also like to point out that the most I hear people overly swearing is when I'm in a middle or high school setting.
I do ask, then, what are your views on swearing on tv, in music, and in PG-13 movies? Those are targeted at youth and half the time, no one says anything. They just dismiss it and attempt to find a hidden plot.
To me, swearing-- like all words-- when used right does not make a person uneducated. It really is all about using words in a correct fashion, and understanding the meaning behind them. However, in our culture, certain swear words seem to have lost their swear connotations in ordinary language. Since meanings of words are constantly changing, shouldn't it be acceptable to use those words in their new meanings? And if not, when, if ever is it socially acceptable to use them?
As to the underage drinking: I have underage friends who say that when they turn 21, they don't imagine alcohol being as appealing and the idea of getting drunk as fun as they do now. i know that that doesn't speak for everyone, that there will always be people who see the need and fun in getting drunk, but it is tantamount to swearing. There will be people who swear to seem cool, then grow out of it. There will also be people who overdo it and people who never do it. It's just how it is right now.
Finally, I do commend horseartist for standing up and stating her opinion, but this is also a website for debate, so I am stating my opinion in hopes that we can both learn more about the other side and subsequently, strengthen our arguments.

I don't get why there are swears. The whole idea is dumb. My friends and I were once discussing how we hate how your middle finger is a swear. I mean, it takes a perfectly good finger and turns it into something bad. It's so stupid! Who agrees?
That's why I use certain "swear" words. Because to me, they are just words used to express how I'm feeling or something else I want to explain. I did not determine them swear words, and I do not know who did, but word connotations can and do change. I cannot speak for everyone on this board, but I cannot promise that I will stop swearing. If I had it my way, no one would use terms like "that's so gay" or "that's so retarded," but unfortunately, the best I can do right now is say something and then learn to ignore it and forcibly make it not ingrained into my mind. Sometimes, that's all you CAN do. But don't let words that you disagree with stop you from doing something you want. Just say something if it gets to be too much, and otherwise, make a mental note NEVER to use the words you hate so much.
I'm not trying to persuade you to use the words or agree with us. I'm just trying to explain to you my perspective on "swear" words.
In my eyes, swearing is like underage drinking: it's only appealing when its forbidden. Anyways, that's my shpiel once again. I really should get on my paper due Wednesday... Or finish my novel. Word count wise, it's longer than HP3 and almost as long as Twilight. I feel a massive editing is soon in order.
And I just realized: In 20 years, I'm going to be the mother who has the kids that only Meg will let hers be around.
I don't want those words rubbing off on me. Ever. This is YouthNoise. To me, swearing is more like crazy, pointless noise. Think, do we really want young people say swears like that? No.
Was it nessary to say that? No. You could have said many different, non-swearing words that would have been as, if not more, meaningful. No, it's not cool. I won't let you make me thinking that it is. And yes, I am going to judge you. I'm going to judge that you are not the type of person I should and want you to be talking to. If you want to go and walk arround swearing, go ahead. But just don't put it where I will see it. I want to be able to debate, please don't ruin it for me!
I don't get why there are swears. The whole idea is dumb. My friends and I were once discussing how we hate how your middle finger is a swear. I mean, it takes a perfectly good finger and turns it into something bad. It's so stupid! Who agrees? My Christain view is that God created that finger. And then someone decided that that amazing thing he created is a swear. GRRR!!! I mean, if you want to show some one that you are mad at them, then tell them that you are mad at them! VERY SIMPLE!
ON A MORE PLEASANT NOTE: I'm very excited for spring break! I'mgonna bike and horseback ride, and bike and horseback ride, and bike and horseback ride! Oh and draw! I'll draw what I see horseback riding and biking! And if I have good weather, I'll tan. Oh, and go in the hottub. yeah, that's my plan for spring break. FUN-NESS!!!

While I respect that that is your opinion, I will ask you not to judge me or tell me how to speak. I was not swearing at anyone (even though yes I have done this on other threads for which I now apologize) I was merely using the word in a sentence. Let's just live & let live, cool?
