Are you ready to look yourself square in the eye and size yourself up?

Are you ready to see yourself as others see you?

This is an eye-opening exercise I was introduced to first at Governor's School this summer. In my Area III ("Learning About Yourself") class, people at first were a little scared to do this exercise, but it's really a great way to understand how the way you perceive yourself is sometimes different from the way others perceive you. (BTW, no comments about how your body looks or performs in life.)

For example, my comments about myself:

My Virtues: I am independent, strong, well-spoken, well-read, musical, supportive, and poetic.

My Flaws: I am dependent when I don't know my way (independent otherwise), outspoken, occasionally too angry, self-destructive, perfectionistic (kind of a paradox there... :P ), easily hurt, and not enough in the loop most of the time to know what the he11 I am talking about anyway.

Note: When you're doing this exercise, make sure you give just as many pros about yourself as cons. I'm guilty of making too many cons about myself because, as I said above, I'm a perfectionist. I consider it a flaw because it makes my life miserable most of the time. Rrg, why can't I be perfect? <<<See what I mean?

Anyway, try this exercise and post what you think about yourself. You might be surprised at what you find. Ask other people (whom you TRUST---not mortal enemies :P ) to comment about you, so you can get others' viewpoints. The whole point of this exercise is that if you can understand yourself, you are well on your way to understanding others.

Peace,

Birdy cool

You will have to excuse me if I begin taking a philosophical tone of mind. I believe that what others see can be unimportant most of the times. For some of us, being seen as others see us is heartbreaking, for others, it can be a wonderful experience. For that reason alone, we should try to keep our view of ourselves untainted. But, that rises a new question. What if we need to know what others see? What if what others see may induce the need for change? For that question, we need to learn to take an almost apathetic view, meaning to view ourselves without emotion and without feeling. A form of total seperation from ourselves allows us to view what others see without being overwrought about what they say. Still on a further note, what about the people doing the viewing? Are they just as apathetic about you? The answer is most likely no. Others' views about you can be just as tainted, if not, more so. Many have prejudices that they are not easily inclined to let down. I hope I haven't confused anybody more. I just tend to take a very different and more verbally detailed approach to things.

...I think it'd be a great experience to see myself as others see me. then maybe i'd understand where they were coming from when dealing with me better, and therefore i could react better to them.

I bet if I really thought about it, I could list for a while, but I won't tire eyes with that.

I think about how other people perceive me a lot .. that might even be one of my flaws: caring too much about how I appear to others. ;P

My Virtues: I'm passionate, realistic, ambitious, concerned, curious, and interested

My Flaws: I'm insecure, indecisive, cynical, materialistic, rather lazy, and critical

Guess I should go work on that ... wink

I am a caring, very passionate, loyal, independent, loud, soft, talented, and a funny person.

I also can get angry say from 0 to 1000 in three seconds. I work hard but not on my room (so it's kinda messy- sometimes). I can't be happy with the things I do. I can't be satisfied with the things I do I always want to do even better or even more.

I really don't care how people see me. I try not to think about how I think people see me because the way I think people see me is not the way they see me it's the way I see myself.
