This literally is random and it's probably going to only take like one post to answer it but.... We're hatching chickens in Biology and if we don't have homes for the chickens our teacher's feeding them to the python and I've wanted a chicken for forever so I'm definetely smuggling one out in my sweatshirt pocket at least, but I have no idea how to take care of one, like what they eat and where to keep them and can you house break a chicken? I've heard you could but it sounds ridiculous. I know its random but does anyone have a "I took the pet chick home from school" story or know how to take care of one for like food and whatnot? So far my only reference is Fly Away Home but those were geese so.... Yeah. Lol, thanks.

It's going to need "running space" once it's not a chick. You can't keep an animal in a box. "You learn about equality in the classroom but you find out about it in life" - Campus Confidential www.myspace.com/yogore

Chikennamographology(TM), I am going to have to use that word now somewhere in today's conversation.

Seroiously attempt to register the chicken with the AKC. " American Kennel Club? I thought it was the American Klub for Chikennamographology(TM)"

Fuzzy stuff, consists of shavings. Just go to your local feed store or Petco and ask for shavings for an animal cage. Other than that, you have it down. If you have anymore questions, NOISEmail me.

Well, I'm the kind of kid who's rabbit was eaten by the neighbor's dogs. One several occasions. I think I have a reputation for animals dying while in my care or something, and if that chicken dies within a week I will bawl my eyes out and stick to goldfish for the rest of my life. Anyway.... I think I've got it down. Box. Warm light. Lots of water in bowl or pan. Fuzzy stuff in the box. Chicken food. Got it. Hopefully. I'm gonna name it hooka or terriyaki. All this anticipation and watch me not even get to keep one. *sniff*

Dude, you're freaking out over a very small matter. No, it doesn't need "running space." No, you don't need to clip its wings, it's not like it's going to migrate every year. Just put the chick in a box with a lamp, newspaper, feed, and water. Let it grow. Train it. Then, do whatever with it. It's not a big deal.

Oh yeah Petco has those little pamphlets on raising the animal... Doesn't it need like "running space" or something? My parents are not going to be very happy if the chick is making "mistakes" all over the house so I'll have to read the part about house training really carefully... And I know chickens genereally don't fly more than short distances but do I still need to clip its wings? And will it fall down the stairs!? I've fallen down those things and yeah... makes me worry.

Yes, you need a heating lamp. Otherwise, the chick will get sick. Also, yes, that kind of lamp will work also. Again, yes, you feed the chick chicken feed until it grows up. Then, you keep feeding it chicken feed. Surprisingly, chickens grow up quickly.

You can house break birds in general. I bvelieve you can for chicks too. Look for bird training books at the library. I know I've read about having chickens as pets. To my knowledge, chickens always eat chicken feed. Petstores should have info. Wait wait, you need a heating lamp even though its a chick? If I keep it inside will it be warm enough or can I use one of those lamps like with the little orange cage that people use on cars because those get warm and we have one and my parents were already iffy enough about bringing one home I'm actually surprised my mom didn't bite my head off at the idea. And you just feed it chicken feed for forever? You don't change it when it gets older or something? Or do they grow really slow... lol sorry I'm being confusing.

Yeah, okay. Somehow, I knew something like this would end up on YN... Here's what you do: Go to the local feed store and get chicken feed. Find a closed in spot such as a box, trashcan, etc. and fill it with something warm, like paper, towels, shavings, etc. Then, get a heating lamp, like the ones you put in a lizard's cage and keep it on throughout night time, and off during the day. Also, make sure the chick has plenty of water in a bowl or pan.
