Action-Rogue Spear RTS-Myth III Strategy-CivII/III Racing-Super Mario Kart Online-Rogue Spear Flight Sim-Falcon 4.0 GC-SSBM SNES-Super Mario Kart NES-Duck Hunt
Honourable mentions-Unreal Tournament, Driver, Combat Mission, Quake, Rogue Leader, Quake III. Possibly Aliens Vs Predator(go alien!)
Best all around game: Half-Life The mod cmmunity is STILL keeping this game alive and well four years after release.
Best RPG- Arcanum/Fallout 2. Arcanum has a great interface, plot twists up the wazoo, and a HUGE amount of content. But Fallout has such an innovative game world. If you were to combine Fallout 2's story/ game word with Arcanum's replayability and interface, you'd have the isometric RPG to end all isometric RPG's. Oh, and for your information if you do not own any game in the Fallout series you aren't a gamer.
Best Turn based strat: Civ 3 What more do I have to say, It's Civ 3.
Best Real Time Strat: Empire Earth Allows enough tactical input combined with simplified resource gathering, and on top of that, allows you to play from the stone age to the distant future in one game.
Other excellent games that may not be the best but certainly are must haves:
Tie Fighter The Curse of Monkey Island Ghost Recon Start Control 2 (anyone remember this one?) Lords of the Realm 2 Mechwarrior 2 and M2: Mercenaries Master of Orion 2 Max Payne The list goes on and on...
Whooo I waste too much of my time on these things.
Dang Aloner..I thought i had a bad connection. Actually, with a 56k, Rainbow Six works really well...maybe you weren't playing on any of the good servers on Zone. A lot of my R6 friends had great connects (ex: T1) and hosted great and non-laggy games. Maybe you should try playing in games that have a good connection, and fewer people on the server (8 is usually a good number).
And actually..it is a form of art to be able to bear against lag and still win...many of us mastered it.
You might need a better connection loner.I would say the best multiplayer game is Tribes 2,even if counter strike and quake get the most publicity.Has anyone seen the screenshots of Doom 3,man they are sweet but youre gonna need a beast to run it.
Har har. Multiplayer rainbow six is horrible, over the internet, atleast. On a LAN, it's fun, but over the internet play . . . well, it sucks, as the engine just does not receive information well enough. One minute no one seems to be near you, the next someone pops up right in front of you and before you can shoot, you die.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. It has a nice control layout, good graphics, twisted storyline spanning multiple centuries, some fairly innovative concepts, and on top of that you get to shoot zombies with enchanted shotguns. The variety of weapons is just the icing on the cake, however. Oh, and the the cutscenes are good too. The voiceacting is a little melodramatic at times, but they (the cutscenes) really add a lot to the game. If you like Lovecraft you'll probably like this game, it seems to draw a lot from his work.
Best RPG: Chrono Cross Best First Person Chooter: Half-Life Best 2-D side scroller: Mario Bros. 3 Best Fighting Game: Super Smash Bros. Melee Best Sports: Tony Hawk 2
I'm just basing these on games I've played, I haven't got my hands on too many new ones.
Super Mario Bros. K, seriously, I wouldn't know. I don't play a lot of games, but the best I have is probably Rogue Spear(though I only have the demo).
