Ok, so as most of you are aware, someone broke in to my house and was in my bedroom for a half hour going thru drawers while I was in it. It pretty much freaked me out. Now I'm having a bit of trouble getting to sleep at night. I have managed to get to sleep mostly due to the efforts of Brian and him agreeing to call 911 if I call his cell at any random time of night. And then basically sleeping with my cell under my pillow. This seems to me to be 1. kind of inconvient to Brian and 2. kind of unsustainable... I'm not sure how long he will put up with me. So anyway, my question to all of you is, how do you get over your fears?

This is what Unisom is for. And if I said anything constructive, you'd only get mad at me for not saying want you want to hear and not feeling sorry for you.

EG, don't patronize me I called 911 after it happened, I'm not an idiot. I am not trying to seek attention, I'm simply trying to get a good nights sleep. I have done all of the rational things like lock my doors before I go to bed. It is unlikely my family is going to invest in a security system or bars on the window or things like that. If you have something consrutive to suggest, go ahead. IF you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

OR you can stop seeking attention from the internets and get real help... Honestly, if someone broke into my house, the very last thing on my mind would be making a thread about it on YN.

You could get bars on your windows or have locks attached on the inside. And if you're against a baseball bat, there's always pepper spray. Probably not a good idea to keep it under your pillow though.

I already told her that she turned the idea down flat, no one seems to think blunt force trauma to a skull is very effective any more

See about getting a security system for your house. At the very least, you could get those things that make a lot of noise if the seal is broken and that would do one of two things: scare them off or give you advance warning. You could put them on your windows and just turn them off if you decide to open them. You could also invest in a baseball bat...or at least take some sort of self-defense class. It would help to give you a bit of peace of mind.

Maybe you should consider sleeping in your sisters room for now or something like that. The good thing is you're not home alone.

parents weren't here when the house got broken in to. Dad lives elsewhere, mom was on a trip. Mom and sister are now in my house, but that doesn't seem to help much. I'm sort of afraid that they would just sleep thru me getting attacked. My mom is a very heavy sleeper. Again, this is probably irrational.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad in any way. If I came off that way I apologize. I'm just trying to see this rationally. Anyhow, where are your parents in all of this? Or you live alone now?

not right by my bed, and if they are in my room I couldn't get out of bed to go GET my house phone to call on it. Plus they would still answer and TRY to talk to me which would be a voice which the bad ppl might hear. Ok, whatever, this argument isn't really the point. You are probably right, I'm being dumb, which is the point of this thread because I'd rather not be dumb. And my life is probably not in danger, I just go scared and am now irationally afraid.

You don't have a house phone? They automatically know your location if you call them from there. quote: Sleeping at someone elses house seems to me to be fairly unsustainable and inconvient as well. If you're truly as afraid for your life as you say you are, then you should consider it.

Isn't it more convenient to call 911 yourself? I mean, to say that you would call him for him to call the cops makes it seem to me like it takes A LOT more time to get you help than if you do it. Plus, to say that you would call him tells me that you expect to have time to make one phone call, isn't it wiser to make that phone call to the cops? That's just my opinion on this. Try to not to freak out so much, and if you don't feel safe in your house maybe you should be staying in the company of a friend or relative. Or sleep over at someone else house for now.
