I got Damn Small Linux to run well on a 500 MHz IBM with only 28 MB of memory. And it only takes 200-300 MB of installation space. Not very full-featured, so I'd try Vector Linux, which apparently is very configurable. A hint: when it comes to window managers, go with Xfce, which is very, very low on system requirements. I know DSL uses it, and I think the standard version of Vector Linux will install it.

a computer that barely could run windows 98

What kind of computer can't run Linux? Maybe you tried a distro that was too system-heavy. I like Ubuntu, but it can be taxing. Try Damn Small Linux. Or plain ol' Debian. There's a distro called Vector Linux that supposedly has really low system requirements, but I've never had any experience with it. Also, Firefox > Opera. As for Trillian...I don't like that you have to pay to get the better version (can't video chat on Trillian Basic), but it's better than the other major all-access instant messenging client, Pidgin (neé Gaim). Pidgin may be open source, but it doesn't work as well as Trillian. Last time I tried it, I couldn't transfer files at all while using the MSN protocol. I seem to remember Trillian giving me problems with that, but that was a long time ago. And it wasn't exactly a legit version of Trillian Pro... I think it will only be a matter of time until both Live Messenger and Yahoo Instant Messenger incorporate AIM into them. You can already message Yahoo friends with MSN and vice versa. I don't use AIM on principle: I hate anything associated with AOL. Few of my friends have AIM anyways.

Yup "accidentally" reformated it attempting to cleanse it of windows. Thank god I had a ghost of the machine to back up to. Turn out the machine itself was so tainted by the demon spawn that it actually couldn't run linux. (translation: the piece of crap didn't have the specs to run it)

I really like firefox, but it's also getting more popular, so Opera may be better. You erased a hard drive? And I thought deleting the entire games folder and having to have your dad reinstall it was bad... And wow. I thought this was the nerd thread. Shade, AIM will steal your soul.

I know I'm downloading it and Opera (possibly firefox, any one have a recc.?) as soon as I have my own machine. The old man doesn't like me putting cool software (like linux or the aboce) on his computers I swear erase one hard drive and they label you

I also suggest Trillian. It is superior.

Yes simply because the majority of us have it

Just use Trillian and then they all look the same, without any adware.

AIM sucks. Stick with MSN.

I don't like this noisemail business. I like posting my email in open view so people can send me things. Shade, if you lack AIM and MSN, you should just email me your email and then I will send you an email back.

Shade lacks both an AIM and as I recall and MSN you know we do have a Noisemail function TS, it's wonderful for asking people questions like this
