I think that ppl should accept the way they look...being a lil round on the side isn't all the bad is it? Know one wants to be a twig. People should have more self-esteem in themselves...and ppl shouldn't always believe the media...not everything is true...more like a bunch of baloney. Love yourself for who you are.

I know how it is to eat an eat an eat an not gain a pound.. I weigh a measley 117 pounds, an I can eat a lot... it sucks being this small... everyone that I know always says "oh I wish I was as small as you" an I always tell them that its not all that fun. I mean I can't even lay on the floor with out havin to have a pillow under neath me cuz my hip bones dig in the floor... or lay in one position cuz I'll get numb an can't move... I ain't the type to judge, I have friends of all shapes an sizes... an I do think that the media has alot to do with the girls/boys self asteem's... they wanna look like what they see on tv... thats just my opinion though....

bottom line is...its no ones fault that ppl get anorexic balemic...im a firm beleiver that your own well being and health starts with your own self-esteen. if somone lacks it, maybe its their peers fault, maybe their parents...but never the media...i mean com'on ppl....

The media pays more attention to thin girls because thinness is desired by society in general. Society desires thinness because it's all they're exposed to through the media.

It's one big damning circle.

Thanks Cyndii! But when you said "sex sells" I know that's why they put size 2 girls in the media. But doesn't it promote teen sex? And doesn't it say the girls are only sex objects? And that everyone that's skinny is beautiful? And plus-sized girls are ugly & it makes more people want to be skinny & have eating disorders. And making people have low self esteem? You work for the media right? So can you tell them some of these idea's of why it's wrong not to show plus-sized girls in the media? You don't have to, I was just asking... because I think it would be a nice change.

Good Points!
I guess it is hard for me to make an argument on the issue since I am a designer and am in advertising.
I do think that the media has a negative effect on young girls with the way they portray the average person as being a size 2. Unfortunatly, in the medias defense (well sort of defense, more like an excuse) In design school we learn...SEX SELLS! If you are advertising a cute little tiny bikini, it only makes sence (advertising wise) to put that skinny girl in the advertisement. Know, I did not say that it is the right thing to do if you want to help girls with self esteam, but it is the right thing to do if you want to sell that cute little tiny bikini. However, putting a girl in that same ad that has a more realistic body size, say a size 7 or 8. The media might find that they reach a much larger audience, being that Size 2, probably isn’t the average size.
Maybe the media should think a little harder on who the majority audience is.

So, do I agree with your noiseboard? YES
But from a business stand point, the media sometimes might be in the right.

Cyndii: Some of the bigger girls do go & exercise & eat healthy! I'm a swimmer & a soccer player, I eat healthy & I'm still overweight. & not all skinny girls "get of the couch" some of them are lazy, just like some of the overweight girls. See my point? & It's not right to make fun of the skinny or fat people it's just wrong. Some over weight people have a diseas(sp?) that prevent's them to lose weight... just like how some skinny girls can't gain a pound.

Wow! I have to wonder how much of this complaining has to do with our own lack of self esteam! I know people who are very skinny, but do not want to be. Some people have trouble gaining wieght. You can’t be unfair. Everyone is built differently and deserve respect (even the skinny people.) Do your research, there are lots of plus size models. Many models for athletic magazines are short and stocky!
I think it is such a shame that we are raised in a world with women who are taught to hate skinny women because of there looks. I am constantly disturbed by girls who make snyde comments if a pretty girl walks by. It is so sad. Are we realy that obsessed with our own appearence that we have to attack those who fit into the desired appearence catagory.

Love the way you are built. Love everything about yourself. What is it about your build that makes you special? Me? I am only 5 foot tall. Yup! I am a shrimp! I am also a firefighter. Many people think I am too small to do what I do. But you know what? When they need someone small to fit in those tight places, they call on me. My heigth makes me special.

No, I am not real skinny. I am about 20-30 pounds over my reccommended wieght. It does bother me, but not because I want to look skinny. It bothers me because I know If I were in better shape, I would not get tired so easily.

Some times your wieght is a problem, if it keeps you from doing what you want to do. So there is nothing wrong with wanting to be skinnier, so long is it is for the right reasons.
So give those skinny girls a break. I admire there ability to get off the coach and be healthy!

Illusciato: How rude are u? "no one wants to look at fat models!!" Plus Sized models are pretty to! & why should the media only have skinny models? When some people look at the skinny models they become anorexic or bulimic (sp?) or they over eat! So they SHOULD put plus sided modles in the media. Also how come in a lot of stores they don't have bigger clothes? At Old Navy they started putting bigger clothes in there stores (12,14,16,18,20) (XL,XXL,XXL) So why can't other stores? It's not fair! Bigger people need nice clothes to & it's not fair to say plus sized people are ugly & useless. And it's not fair to say skinny people are anorexic or bulimic(sp)!

Desert Eagle, why oh why are guns, dogs, whales, and dolphins on that list?!?!

This doesnt quite fit into this thread but i would like to say it anyway. Many people either are unaware or refuse to acknowlege that there is another type of eating disorder besides anorexia and bulimia. Yes, in certain cases overeating is an eating disorder. Some people also use food as a coping mechanism for their psychological issues, instead of eating nothing or throwing up they overeat. Sadly, these people go untreated and are told to go on a diet and "be strong" instead of getting real help.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

You seemed to of missed my whole point there. What I'm saying is that, some people will go around and call those who are naturaly thin anorexic or bulimic (maybe just because their a little bit thinner than them). And people should stop doing that, its like going to someone thats heavier and calling them a pig. Just like they would feel horrible about themselves, so do those girls who arent anorexic or bulimic but are called that. That was what I was trying to say. People have to try and see that both ways.

I understand completly waht your are saying, and they should have some more plus sized models and stuff. But the things is that when some people see some people that are naturally thin, they start saying that their anorexic or bulimic. Which just sickens me as much, as their not being more plus sized models. Some people just have to understand it both ways.

That was profound and needed to be repeated. But in addition to that, the terms anorexic and bulimic shouldn't be applied as insults at all.

I wish people would begin to understand them as the psychological illnesses they are. You aren't anorexic when you choose to skip meals. You aren't necessarily anorexic when you call yourself fat. When you use food restriction as a coping mechanism for dealing with other psychological issues, when you are pervaded by acute, irrational fear of food and weight gain, when you feel as though eating normally is not even an option for you anymore, and when you spend every moment of every day drowning in your own disgust and self-loathing, then you know you have it. Only then.

Most models are a size 2-6. Plus size models usually start around a 12, sometimes 14. If that's the case it sure isn't much fun to be a size 7 or 9.

Girls have to be skinney, personally I would love to gain 20 pounds, it might sound crazy, but even if it was 10 pounds of fat, 10 pounds of muscle I would gladdly accept, I can eat whatever the crap I want anytime I want, and I can't gain anything, I've been stuck where I am (well within 5 pounds) for over a year now, and I'm startine to be sick of being a stick.

And D*eagle, you forgot frosties. Smile

Everyone on t.v.,magaines, ect. Are ALL airbrushed! Their made to look thin! Why should weight matter? I'm mot a skinny person myself but I'm not obese(sp) either, but weight shouldn't matter, it's love, attraction to that person,& personality. Thats all that should matter. So don't lose weight for anyone lose weight for yourself... & feel good about yourself!

I'm not obese myself, but I would NEVER, EVER change my diet to lose one pound of wieght. Eating is one of the greatest things about life, and theres no point in throwing that away. I personally like a woman with some meat on her bones, not those grotesquely thin skeletons they call people. Imagine life without all those delicious meats, scrumptious desserts, oh-so-tasty ham, mashed potatoes, guns, gravy, sweet peas, dog, chocolates, corn, roast beef, cereals, jello, ice cream, turkey, steak, french fries, pancakes, SPAM, eggs, buffalo, french toast, hamburgers, ketchup, quail, soup, rock cornish game hen, cobbler, oranges, dolphin, rice, cats, burritos, wan-tons, General Tso's chicken, salmon, soy sauce, tacos, bacon, hot dogs, ducks, bass, swordfish, whale, slurpees, spaghetti, lasagna, , pizza, chicken, carrots, mac and cheese, etc. All these wonderful foods to enjoy! Hmm, I think I will...

Plus size people are the most beautiful people on Earth. Example- Rubuen Studdard. Cameron Manheim(sp?).
