Hey everyone, Bella here. Even though the subject of my topic says that it's primarily for those of us who prefer to be unique, anyone can really relate to it! My best friend has blue hair and is totally hardcore- everything from her black clothes to her multiple piercings to her black sharpie tatoos (hehe) is gothic. Everything, that is, except her personality. She's a total girly-girl at heart, and couldnt be nicer. But teachers, storeowners, and even strangers, treat her like trash. She got suspended from school for a reason that still hasnt been made clear to her,or anyone else, and is constantly kicked out of stores. People cross the street when they see her coming in their direction. This isnt fair- she never did anything to anyone! It really upsets me that my friend is being isolated for trying to express herself. Can anyone relate?

I read that some of you said that you dont have to wear black to be gothic, that it's the way you think at times and i agree. I also read that if your a girly-girl at heart and is dressing gothic that your not really expressing yourself, well i really disagree with that. We are always expressing ourselves, everyday, and it doesnt matter if ur a girl-girl or an ahlete, they just might like the way the clothes look/feel. I am a girly-girl too but i love the way gothic and punker clothes look like and i dress like that sometimes too. Actually i dress whatever . I dress however i feel like dressing the morning i wake up. If i feel in a darker mood I'll dress darker if im happy I'll dress with pictures on my shirt , like sesame street , or if im feeling hot , like it is today, im just wearing a tank top and b-ball shorts. I have heard that when teens wear gothic looking clothes that means they are dangerous, well i think thats crap! A preppy person could turn out to be the dangerous one! Everyone should just dress the way you want , whatever it is, no matter what. Who cares if people stare at you, thats their problem, they are not you, it doesn't matter because you know if you are a good person or not and thats all that matters.

Here is my question...What is the difference between dressing like everyone else and dressing to not look like everyone else? If you analyze this you might notice something. A person who tries hard to fit in is not being themselves. A person who tries not to fit in, just may be doing the same thing. If you are purposly trying not to look like everyone else; are you trying so hard that you forgett how to just be yourself. I don’t get into the clique thing. I have always had more fun just being me. I do wear shirts with name brand logos on them. Why? because I am a t-shirt designer...I like logos. I don’t wear them to fit in, but when I wear a logo, I am labled as a person trying to fit in. I love my old, torn, baggy sweatshirt in the winter. I don’t wear it because I want people to see that I am not one of those people who need to impress people with fancy clothes. I don’t wear it to make a statement. I wear it because it is sooo comfortable.
So, forgett this whole idea of not listening to Britney Spears just because that is what everyone else is listening to. Forget this idea of boy-cotting Tom Hifiger clothes because that is what the prepy kids wear. Forget this idea that if you dye your hair black it will make you different. Don’t think you have to make a statement to prove that you are not like everyone else. Trying not to be like everyone else, is the same is trying to be like everyone else. You are both trying to be someone your not.
What makes you different and what makes you real...is you, being you.

what if i wear a khaki skirt and pink polo shirt but i have piercings in my eyebrow and all up my ears and dyed jet black hair with blue streaks? what does that make me? i think everyone should stop trying to fit others into neat little catergories. just lighten up and let people do their own thing without putting a label on them.

Then I'm sure you dress that way. No one should judge anyone by their cover, you should judge others by their personality. But their are sometimes exceptions to that rule like in DesertEagles case. He seems to talk before he thinks. ByE bYe

popularity, and gothic: 2 words that should never be used in the same sentence... my friend took needle and thread and just started sewing the thread up his arm!

These kind of kids ruin and tarnish the word "gothic". You are supposed to be yourself. There SHOULD be no popularity contests in the goth world, but stupid kids make it that way. It's just human nature to ruin a good thing. It's kind of like if Hippies believed in love and peace, but hated black people or something.

quote: Another question: What makes a goth a goth?
A number of things. You don't HAVE to dress in black, but that would certainly make you "more" of a goth. I think goths in general tend to be quieter, "darker" people. This is why I tend to like them. Another thing is that most goth people are not worried about their popularity, or how other people think of them. I think this is refreshing. Which is why I hate it so much when I see PREPPY punk kids that say they're gothic just to be cool, and act like suck-up @sskissing morons, especially when they are mean to anyone, which an ideal gothic person is NOT mean to someone just because they are different. A lot of French people are gothic.

these punks/goths w/e who are "expressing themselves" How is she expressing HERSELF who she really is? if u say shes a girly girl at heart??? then she isn't expressing herself at all...i think that goths are not individual at all...instead they are just conforming and taking the lead of some jr/sr's who had already done it before them....cuz now they too are crying for acceptance from the "goth group" a tru individual wouldnt' fit into any catagory I.E. Goth/punk/thug/ etc.

I totally get what you're all saying, especially Iceland, because at my school there are sooo many preps that say that they are punk and then they like, cry if they break a nail or flunk a test. I also think that in some cases, punk and goth can strcitly be attitudes. At the private school right next to mine, they all have to wear uniforms. But there are still a bunch of people there that have the whole attitude going on. Another question: What makes a goth a goth?

Punks are stupid, they suck (sorry, that's my opinion). All the "punk" people at my school are SO preppy. They call themselves "rockers" and they don't know who Aerosmith is. They are so cliquey and preppy, it makes me sick. They are all SO fake! And, these, these are the worst, the ones who say they're gothic, when they are the farthest thing from it.
Goths are WAY better. Gothic people are nice, and don't care what people think about them, and tend to be smart. They tend to have a hidden kind of intelligence, and are definitely not preppy.

well i think it could also work the same way with people who may be blonde or preps. when most (not all) people see a blonde they think "o. its a ditz" or something like that. the same thing happens with preps, some people automatically assume that their great students and have the greatest lives. You can dress preepy and still rebel and you can dress gothic and be the greatest student and the sweetest person ever. personally i find the goths/punks/skaters are more friendly than the preps at my school. most of the preps at my school are flat out mean. and no im not judgeing them i actually know them.(small school) so its not only the goths or punks that get judged, its also the preps too- but the goths/punks pick up alot of crap just for being different.
**i would like to make it clear that im not on anyones side here. i think everyone gets judged, just some more than others and alot of it may have to do with the situation.

I have black clothes, multiple piercings and I am usually always drawn on. Does that mean that I look gothic? But no, people don't usually avoid me until I start to talk.
