OH, my baby!" a lady cried out. Her baby had just fallen out of the boat into the water. The water carried the baby quickly away.
A man came forward and said, "Can you give me something the child has worn?"
The lady gave him a little apron. The man turned to his dog. He pointed first to the apron, and then to where the child had sunk.
The dog jumped into the river. Soon he was seen far away with something in his mouth. When the sailors drew the child and dog from the water, everyone cried for joy. The lady ran to her little boy. He was alive! The lady threw her arms round the dog's neck, and said to his owner, "Oh, sir, I will give anything for the dog!"
"I am very glad, madam, that my dog has helped you. But I would not give him away for anything in the world," said the man.
The dog looked as if he knew they were talking about him. He lay down at his master's feet, with a look in his eyes that seemed to say, "Nothing shall part us!"
