Ana: Wow, how's that for ZERO reading comprehension? I just said that the meanings of the word "liberal" or "conservative" don't make much sense anymore, can vary tremendously, and that many old "liberals" might be called "conservative" by some people. I never said that you can't call yourself "liberal" or that you were brainwashed. Why don't you calm down and re-read my post, instead of flaming me over it?

Ishtar: Both really, since essentially their meanings have been blurred or misused. At this point, someone like Barry Goldwater might be considered “Liberal” for his views on Abortion, Gay rights, the religious right, etc. Likewise, someone like JFK could actually be called “conservative” by some people based on his views on taxes, communism, role of the military, possibly abortion, etc.
Catilina: Enforcing the law is reactionary? From my perspective, if we actually enforced immigration laws (with maybe a few reforms to them), pushed for greater assimilation, and tried to eliminate any incentives that could result in companies hiring and exploiting illegal immigrants (like Wall mart did awhile back) then we will be able to progress as a society. And as for the abortion restrictions comment... Well, I'm not even going to go into that. And on the subject of Gay Marriage: Yes, most conservatives obviously don’t want that. But some are willing to give homosexuals Civil Unions, with all (or most) of the same legal rights as marriage. That to me could be called moderately progressive. Although sometimes the two can be merged. Fascist governments for example in general try to create radically different societies based on some past ideals. Many Communist regimes also arguably tried to do the same thing (ex: Pol Pot, Stalin).

Catalina, "progressive" has different meanings: It can mean somebody who wants a change. However, in the modern political context, it is a euphemism for what was once called a leftist radical, basically like the 60's bomb-throwers.
The closest conservative counterpart to that term is "reactionary." However, I don't see any of JusticeConservatism's specific points nor yours really fitting either one.

"Increasing abortion restrictions" "Enforcing immigration laws" Ye Gods! You call THAT PROGRESSIVE? I am sorry, but this looks to me like going back to the middle ages! And what about gay marriage? Sure, conservatives are REAL progressive where THAT's concerned. Catilina

I think that there are both found on the site. But I do think that most are extremes. Either Extremely Radical or Extremely Conservative. Its hard to find a medium. But I do agree with everyone should make their own opinions and not base it of others.

These boards seem evenly divided, Bosox. There are lots of pro-freedom conservatives, and mostly the opposite with the liberals, and a few of all ideologies in between. You can pigeonhole some folks here, but not all, either left, right, up or down. I happen to be pro-choice, pro-gun, pro-civil union, pro-media regulation, etc. I don't think I fit a standard definition of either ideology.

I consider myself a fiscal conservative...
But I am pro pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, etc.
I think its ironic the "true" American wants to practice the opposite of the American way. FREEDOM.

Did you just say that the literal definitions of liberal and conservative are meaningless? Or were you talking about the political ones? Hehe, how very silly.

Ishtar: Well, I was kind of alluding to that… Anyway, my point is that those “definitions” are essentially meaningless.
And in my case, pretty much any definition is meaningless. I take idea from various libertarian, conservative and authoritarian (!) movements/figures... You'd have a hard time categorizing me.

Liberal or Conservative...Hmm which am I?
Liberal and proud of it, but saying all liberals are "Pro-Gay"...Not true, some but not all...Sure I don't agree with gay marriage, but it isn't the matter of the National Gov't to choose what a recognizable marriage is, that is up to the state to decide...Defending the woman's right to choose?...hmm, I'm for it...Another touchy subject but should a woman have to carry around a child if she has been a victim of rape or molestation from a family member?...or anyone else for that matter...Liberals think with open minds, and are for change, but not some...vice-versa for Conservatives...

That person was referring to the traditional (conservative? hehe) definitions of liberal and conservative. These literal interpretations are sometimes quite different from the political meanings. You will notice though as you look at your list that most of those are new laws (or whatever) meant to keep things how they traditionally are, how they used to (should?) be and/or to avoid future change.

Comrade: True, corruption/self-interest can be a reason for them to try to keep the status quo in tact. But the same goes for many "liberal" politicians, I'm sure.

Or they could be preserving the status-quo by keeping money in the same hands and keeping the same power structure intact.

I'm conservative, and this site is ok. But everyone is pro-gay. That's what's not ok.

"Conservatives are generally interested in preserving the status-quo. Liberals often want to make change."
Funny, but last time I checked it was mainly "Conservatives" who wanted to bring change by:
Privatizing SS
De-regulating parts of the economy
Increasing abortion restrictions
Giving vouchers to families with children in failing schools
Enforcing immigration laws
Notice that your stereotypical “liberal” would oppose all of those things. There are plenty more examples of cases where “liberals” oppose change.
In any case, "Conservatives" these days do favor change. In fact, many conservatives could be called both "reactionary" (as in going back to the past), because they’re just fed up with our current society. Or they could even be called "progressive," because they want a new society altogether…
