I love John Stossel.
All you Communist "soak-the-rich" girly people should take a look at the facts:
Of the top 1 percent of the American population, those making over $300,000, 34 percent of the income taxes are paid by those people.
34 percent of income taxes are paid by people who make more than $300,000 a year.
Of people who make more than $100,000 a year, 53 percent of income taxes are paid by them.
So 53 percent of the taxes are paid for by people who make more than $100,000.
This is straight from the IRS; read it and weap you Communist pieces of garbage and SHUT up with your stupid, lame arguments against "the rich."

quote: the middle-class gets screwed the most
You got that right, especially locally; changing subjects here, but property taxes are the most regressive and oppressive, and it's evident down here in Texas and a lot of other places. Yeah, and if it weren't for the tax cuts to the very wealthy and well off, those guys in the stock market wouldn't be jumping around like crazy wanting to invest; see, what people like icm do not realize is that basic economics teaches you (I'm learning little by little, but I AM learning) that the less you tax, the more purchasing power a consumer has... ...so what does that mean for our WEALTHY firms and businesses? Well, the less you tax investors and the rich, the more investment you'll get in return; if nobody invested first in Nike, there would be no shoe-making plants, no purchasing of outside goods to make the shoes (i.e., leather, cotton), and oh, NO JOBS. Speaking of which, can someone please tell me why the government has any responsibility for YOU getting a job? Pssh. I don't need a nanny.

um well, let's see, how about anyone earning over 1 million dollars a year be taxed 70% and everyon eles be taxed 20%. and think if you did that, one day, jennifer lopez could be your next door neighbor and you could watch her like a peeping tom (if you're like that ).

I don't know if you'll find this relevant, but here's an article about the problems with a considered flat income tax in Iowa. It makes the point that flat taxes don't really simplify the paperwork involved. http://www.iowapolicyproject.org/release-resources/030314-release-taxsimp.pdfquote: Mr. Stossel, "conveniently", also forgot to calculate in how much of the total gross income belonged to the top 1%.
I ran a search on it and didn't quite come up with what I was looking for. Grr. quote: Its the rich who are supplying jobs for millions of Americans. Tax Cuts- more money for all Americans, especially the rich. The rich then use this to buy more stock and increase thier companies. The stock market is soaring.
Yeah, but where are the jobs?

I have never understood the mass hatred against rich people, and even people who are well off for that matter. Its the rich who are supplying jobs for millions of Americans. Tax Cuts- more money for all Americans, especially the rich. The rich then use this to buy more stock and increase thier companies. The stock market is soaring.

Its also important to note that my conjecture that 34% of gross income was brought in by the top 1% is a low estimate. Im almost 100% sure that it is probably more in the range of 40-55. One thing I will not disagree with most moderate conservative on is that the out of it all the middle-class gets screwed the most.

Yes yes, but we conveniently forgot to put in the factor of how much of the nation's wealth the top 1% owns. Once we put that into the equation that makes it a whole new ball game. Mr. Stossel, "conveniently", also forgot to calculate in how much of the total gross income belonged to the top 1%. Either he doesn't know basic economics are he was purposely manipulating the numbers. Hmm let's see if they brought in 34% of nations total gross income, they would probably pay, hmm maybe 34% of the taxes. Also this is BEFORE tax deductions are added in. This furthers my conjecture that the common libertarian knows very little about BASIC economics.
