An Ode to Bush. In the rhyme scheme of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. I would have put it in "Post Your Poems Here" thread, but I found this forum to be more appropriate.
Once upon a District dreary, leadership was weak and weary,
In the Capitol, Congressmen had something new in store.
After Taliban demonstration the George Bush administration
Said we had an unsafe nation; “Terrorism is at our door.
Give up some rights, lest we let the terrorists through our door.
Just your freedom, nothing more.”
Ah, distinctly I remember just how every Congress Member
Put out rights like they were embers as each was allowed the floor.
The Patriot Act was on the morrow, power the government had to “borrow,”
Liberty was full of sorrow – sorrow for what’s lost for war –
For the wrong, unjust invasion that Bush called a needed war –
Rights given up for evermore.
Then the President beguiling our sad country into smiling,
By the actions taken against the grim faces terrorists wore.
“Though your rights be shorn and shaven,” he said, “The U.S. is no craven.
We’ll attack the terror’s haven, landing on Iraqi shore –
Give me power to drive the terrorists away from U.S. shore!”
Quoth the President, “Give me war!”
Then the country grew much tenser as the people called to censor
Any article, film or paper written against the President’s war.
“Traitor!” they cried, “A true American would give up all they can
To the government; you don’t need the rights you had before!
We need security, just forget the rights you had before!”
Quoth the President, “Give up more.”
And the President still is getting increased power, still is sitting
On the White House throne; we have given him four years more.
And his aims and goals are seeming of a Dictator’s that’s dreaming,
And the people, faces beaming, give him what they’ve worked their whole life for;
The Bill of Rights, our foundations, could be ground into the floor
To be lifted – nevermore!

I like these calm little moments before the storm.
