Barack Obama announced his 2008 presidential candidacy today during his 11:00 (EST) speech. Hundreds gathered to hear him speak in Springfield and even more tuned in on their TV sets.

Did anyone else watch his speech? I was extremely moved and overjoyed to see a young, fresh face so passionate about our country and the direction it is taking. I actually clapped and found myself nodding vigourously at times. He certainly has a charisma about him that I feel the other 2008 hopefuls do not possess. I may not agree with him on all levels (though most), but as of the moment I would like to see him get a nomination. I'm interested to see what else he has to say.

Any thoughts or opinions on his speech and candidacy or Obama in general? Let's hear it.

I don't like how Obama puts so much emphasis on his faith. People should elect a candidate regardless of how religious they are (or what skin color they have or gender they are). I want another Gerald Ford.

Anyways, from the looks of the presidential race so far, I think I'm going to just end up voting Libertarian. I don't really like any of the candidates.

Well, both of the primaries are gonna have their mudslinging, no argument there.

That’s interesting, yet even if it was not Hillary who" dropped the Madrassa Bomb" I am sure that she has other tricks up her sleeve. At any rate Obama has already come out with his own attack against Hillary, criticizing her vote for the Iraq war.

Actually, it was the right-wing Insight Magazine that, so far as anyone can tell, first, as that bastion of journalistic excellence Fox News put it, "dropped the Madrassa bomb." According to CNN:
quote:
Insight attributed the information in its article to an unnamed source, who said it was discovered by "researchers connected to Senator Clinton." A spokesman for Clinton, who is also weighing a White House bid, denied that the campaign was the source of the Obama claim.

The story was then disseminated by (big surprise) Fox News, who (bigger surprise) didn't bother to mention that the true identity of the ouster remains debated.

As for the school even being a "madrassa," insofar as madrassa implies religious Islamic teachings rather than its actual meaning, which is "school," I refer to the same CNN article:
quote:
But reporting by CNN in Jakarta, Indonesia and Washington, D.C., shows the allegations that Obama attended a madrassa to be false. CNN dispatched Senior International Correspondent John Vause to Jakarta to investigate.

He visited the Basuki school, which Obama attended from 1969 to 1971.

"This is a public school. We don't focus on religion," Hardi Priyono, deputy headmaster of the Basuki school, told Vause. "In our daily lives, we try to respect religion, but we don't give preferential treatment."

Vause reported he saw boys and girls dressed in neat school uniforms playing outside the school, while teachers were dressed in Western-style clothes.

"I came here to Barack Obama's elementary school in Jakarta looking for what some are calling an Islamic madrassa ... like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan," Vause said on the "Situation Room" Monday. "I've been to those madrassas in Pakistan ... this school is nothing like that."

Vause also interviewed one of Obama's Basuki classmates, Bandug Winadijanto, who claims that not a lot has changed at the school since the two men were pupils. Insight reported that Obama's political opponents believed the school promoted Wahhabism, a fundamentalist form of Islam, "and are seeking to prove it."

"It's not (an) Islamic school. It's general," Winadijanto said. "There is a lot of Christians, Buddhists, also Confucian. ... So that's a mixed school."

The Obama aide described Fox News' broadcasting of the Insight story "appallingly irresponsible."

Fox News executive Bill Shine told CNN "Reliable Sources" anchor Howard Kurtz that some of the network's hosts were simply expressing their opinions and repeatedly cited Insight as the source of the allegations.

Obama has noted in his two books, "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope," that he spent two years in a Muslim school and another two years in a Catholic school while living in Indonesia from age 6 to 10.

It's really pretty scary that this much BS and mudslinging is going around 21 months before the election.

Well he is defiantly better then Hillary, though with Hilleary running he had better watch his back, she has already hit him with the Madrasah thing, and she is hard to run against.
However If the GOP nominates Tancredo I will vote for him, I’d love to se some one who would actually secure our southern border.

I'm not so sure about this one. For one, the states where his race would significantly work against him are generally the ones a Democrat wouldn't take anyway. For two, even the Deep South states we consider the hotbed of racist activity in the United States have come a long, long way. Tennessee, a state I think a lot of people would place in that group, came within a hair's breadth of electing a black Senator in the 2006 midterms.

I really don't have anything to back this up with, but I kinda think sexism affects Americans more than racism. Sexist mentalities seem to be everywhere to me, and while people tend to think long and hard before making jokes about minorities, a huge number of us are still chuckling at how "women can't drive". Again, just my perception.

As much as I'd love a 45 year old black president we all know it's probably not going to happen. It's a shame, but his chances of making it running against hillary are slim, and there's still to much racism in the US for him to win the elections even if he was the Democratic candidate.

I haven't watched TV in some time and so I did not see this. Frown

But I must say that he is one of my favorites running for president this election. I think he will most likely get my vote if things continue like this.
