Does anyone else think it is completely unfair that Independents in Maryland, NYC, ect. are not allowed to vote?

I understand that states have a right to choose, primary crap and all of that, but for young voters who are still living in the state of the parents' choice [aka. living with the parentals] , it's a hard time to watch somebody win who might've been beaten had independents voted.
