I think that girls under the age of 18 should obtain parental consent because she wouldn't be supporting that child financially, it will be her parents because the girl doens't have a job and if so it wouldnt be enough to raise a child.

Two things:

What if:
1. The parents refuse to support her financially, and
2. The girl has a steady job with a decent income?

Thanks benje309!

I think that girls under the age of 18 should obtain parental consent because she wouldn't be supporting that child financially, it will be her parents because the girl doens't have a job and if so it wouldnt be enough to raise a child. However, there are some qualifications in which parents shouldnt be able to tell their child what to do with their child.

Pro's And Cons For Parental Consent On Abortion

Roll Eyes To be completely honest, I think it should be the Mother's decision on whether or not she wants to have an abortion. Yes, it may be wrong but as independant and not to mention free Americans, any person should have the right to decide what they want.

I think it should be the pregnant persons' choice to have an abortion, not the parents.

Rape? I don't know. Just because the child is a product of evil won't make the child evil. Give it a chance to live and prove itself, even if it isn't in your care.

I don't want to cause problems with my next statement because I KNOW THERE ARE PROBABLY COUNTLESS EXCEPTIONS. (it's just something to keep in mind...)

Realize that in a great number of the cases, you're dealing with teenage girls who were not practicing safe sex to begin with. I don't know how much that says for their responsibility and ability to make good choices for themselves.

(AGAIN, I know there are situations where the birth control was ineffective, or of course cases of rape...but considerirng the fact that abortions due to rape are less than one percent of all abortions performed, and birth control is effective more than not...I'd say my statement is still accurate.)

Did ANYONE read what I wrote? Let me post it again:

quote:
If a minor wishes to have an abortion, and there is a law requiring parental consent, the law must contain a judicial bypass option.

The judicial bypass option can be completed within 24 hours. This involves a judge determining whether or not the minor is capable of making an informed decision regarding abortion.

So long as a new law allows for the judicial bypass option, the Supreme Court has said that requirement of parental consent DOES NOT place an undue burden on the young woman wishing to receive an abortion.

(The Supreme Court case which established this was Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 1992.)

In other words, even where parental consent for an abortion is required, there still must be a way around this requirement for those who do not wish to tell their parents.

Parental consent for abortions should not be required for abortions. If it's my damn fetus, my parents shouldn't be able to tell me whether or not I can have an abortion. The choice to have an abortion is a difficult one, and if I can make that decision I think I should have the right to go through with it. It should be the woman's choice and nobody else's.

I don't know I have mixed feeling about it and yet, if the teenagers knew that they had to get parental consent in oder to have an abortion, then maybe they would think twice before having sex. Maybe the thought of, what if I get pregnant and HAVE to tell my parents.

Ah! The "Every Family Communicates Very Well!" idea.

I don't know how I feel about abortion in general, but if we're going to have it, it should be the woman's decision. And it is better to have safe access to this form of help...one death is better than two.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but to me, a woman who thinks she is responsible enough to choose an abortion for herself, and who would go through the process of proving this maturity and responsibility to a judge, would probably not be the type to go get an illegal abortion.

Just an observation...

The only problem is that within those 24 hours with the judge judging, the girl can be out on the streets getting an illegal abortion. I'd much rather have a girl make an ill-formed decision and be in a sterile professional environment than being in an alley shop w/ some random guy stickin' a knife up her vagina. I think that the Judicial bypass option is great, but I think it needs to be up to the girl and maybe they should have to schedule it so far ahead of whenever they want to have the abortion performed...

Oregon recently declined a measure to have it mandatory for doctors to give 48 hour warning to parents before their minor had an abortion. Where I agree partly with this, there is still debate: what if the child is in an abusive relationship with their parents? However, should the parent need a reason to do something like that? I wasn't abused, so don't take that comment like I "know" what I'm talking about.

limepops, if you're under 18, are you really a woman (or a man) yet? Just because you've hit puberty, doesn't really mean anything. We are still growing and still maturing... 18 is an appropriate age. The mind is stil developing, and always learning.

As it is, this question just implies fear of parents. Really, no matter how bad of a parent you might think they are...they love you, and if they're any kind of mature, they'll decide not only on their beliefs, but on the situation, your beliefs, and your feelings.
