A rather frightening letter came in the mail from the
Interfaith Alliance, an organization that my parents belong to, and I just thought I'd outline the key points of it here:
In a move designed to crush all opposition, House Majority Leader Tom Delay and House Speaker Dennis Hastert are trying to attach the so-called
Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act to the innocuous
American Jobs Creation Act of 2004.
If they succeed,
churches will be able to legally endorse candidates and lend support to campaigns just in time for November's elections--without losing their tax-exempt status.
And because the
American Jobs Creation Act already passed the House and Senate and has moved to the conference committee, the House and Senate will never get a chance to vote ont his sneaky addition to the bill.
I'm sure you're as outraged as I am that our leaders would take such a drastic measure to reverse IRS tax laws so that houses of worship can engage in partisan politicking.
Whatever your political party, I urge you to speak out against this Act. In an age where the line seperating Church and State grows thinner and thinner every day, it is my opinion that this is the last thing America needs.
And then, as the books were told, Fina replied: "A can of worms, my dear friend? What has this to do with reason?"
