Received this e-mail, and I will quote it, as well as give you all the link to the legislation to impose a draft: quote: I've been telling everyone that Bush wants to re-instate the draft. But nobody believed me. Well, I finally found all the info and it's even worse than I had thought. They are not only going to try to enforce the draft on our young men, but our young women as well. This is truly apalling. Please... please don't go for the status quo, think out of the political box and really ask yourself.... do I believe in this? Is this good? Many religious groups think it's important for women to be mothers and take care of their families..... they can never do that if they are fighting wars. Plus, speaking from experience I know I wasn't made for this kind of stuff. There are so many arguments. But please.. ask yourself... "Is this what I expected from the Bush Administration?" I'm NOT advocating Kerry, I believe he is equally as bad, but I am advocating the constitution party, libertarians and independents. Please take the time to read this bill, it is my belief that after the 2004 election Bush will sign it into law.
http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HR00163:@@@L&summ2=m&Note: It was actually introduced in 2003, but it has to be referred to various subcommittees before it actually goes for a vote I imagine...

Ah, Joey, I'm trying to sober up after a big night and now you're hittin' me with this! This looks more like the Swiss system, which, by the way, a lot of evidence suggests was the system we were supposed to have had all along. Look, realistically, a conscription isn't going to happen. It's more likely that Congress will increase incentives in order to draw people in, even in a worst-case scenario. Furthermore, in the past, we fought our wars with huge numbers of men; now the tactics generally demand relatively small, often surgical fighting forces. Technology has also helps and allows one soldier to do the work of several. The only conceivable reason for an actual reinstatement of the draft is if the pool of enlistees drops so drastically that the military cannot recruit enough new people to maintain a reasonable size. Frankly, the military offers enough many benefits like the G.I. Bill, that I think it will continue to draw in recruits, and it is far more likely that Congress will try to increase incentives before trying to reinstate conscription. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but I don't think it will happen, especially given the attitudes of modern Americans. I'm going to bed now.

A draft will never happen, the govt knows we will have the 60's all over again. the only reason the 60's happened was because of the draft and the draft alone.

Personally, I think it would suck, as a girl, to have to be enlisted in a draft. But hey, if they called on all the guys my age to go and fight, I would expect it to be my job to do the same. Although, it would not be fun, especially since girls have to deal with periods and hormones and other stuff guys do not. I don't know if they would DARE get a whole army of women involved, though, because (as my History teacher once said) "girls fight vicious".

No, the underlying question or issue in any debate about the draft/military should be:
Who Owns You?
Do you own yourself, or does the government?
The government does not own me. No politicians own me, and that doesn't matter how hard they try (i.e., patriot act, economics).

while i am a woman who doesnt want to serve in the military under any conditions, i have this to say: If we are going to fight for equal rights, we can't pick and choose. I personally believe that if men are drafted, women should be too. It's hypocritical to say, "we want these rights to be equal, but we're not going to do this.". it doesnt work that way. BUT: i refuse to ever serve in the military against my own will. bottom line....and no president should be able to change my right to choose. serving in the military goes directly against my personal beliefs(for me...anyone else can serve if they want..i dont really care.), and i thought i was free to have my personal beliefs. this issue freaks me out.
