Question:
I was considering running for office before I had my daughter. I might once again once she's in school. I was pretty active in campaigns, phonebanks, canvassing, protests, etc. I was wondering if any YNers had ever done this or is really active in politics (and more so than just reading the papers and complaining or whatever! Razz)

So, are you and politics like oil and water, or peas and carrots?

Choices:
I have run for office, I'm very involved, and very interested.
I haven't run, but I campaign a lot and am very involved.
I'm an armchair activist mostly, but I do some on-the-ground work.
I'm interested some, but I don't usually do much about it.
I can't stand politics and never get involved!

Even if you don't get your card in the mail in time, you can still go to your polling location, and they might have you in their information. I was pretty mad that my information hadn't cleared in time for the beginning of August polling last year, even though I had registered July 11...There was only one issue to vote on, and the results favored the way I would have voted, so I guess it was okay...

I just found out that my ultra-conservative city's newspaper ALWAYS endorses candidates and positions. Mind you, they ALWAYS take the most conservative route, whatever that may be...but at least I know who to get in good with...

Personally, I would run if I cared anything about politics and if I honestly thought I could get elected in with my views on a few key controversial issues. I care enough to vote, however, I had to send my voter's card in because I moved and I had to get a change of address. So, if not getting it in time to vote for local govermment wouldn't dicourage you when it's your first election, then I don't know what really would do it. The only thing that's constant in politics are lies.

I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. My friends, I don't feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for wha

Liebermans situation is a prime example of everything wrong with this country.

The CT primary should be interesting. It looks as though Liberman will be a political casualty of the war in Iraq..

Tuesday's the primary in Michigan, Missouri, Colorado, Connecticut, and Georgia, just in case anybody's wondering. The big primary day won't be until September 12.

I convinced my youth minister and a bunch of the staff members at my church to vote for me when I run for my city's school board...then again, there wasn't a whole lot of doubt in my mind on that one...

I'm in Celtic's boat. Until the general public is ready for a politician that supports legalizing marijuana, making prostitution a government regulated business, and taxing the almighty fuck out of the wealthy, I'm SOL. My casual swearing and views on religion only poison the deal more.

I really should be doing more to help local politicians I like, though. I was gonna volunteer for a Congressional hopeful's campaign this summer, but then I didn't for some reason. Eh, in 2008 I'll really do something, I swear.

I would love to run for office...Some day. When I'm not still in high school and trying to get into college. But then again that eighteen year old did become mayor. I've always wanted to become some kind of politician, though. It may sound silly, but why not try to change the government? I don't agree with it very much now but maybe if you get into office you can help make it better. You can't make a change if you just sit on the sidelines, right?

Everyone says after I say that I will be running...Wink

My neighbors all love me...they'll vote for me. It's just convincing people I don't know to vote for me...

People loose too many brain cells when they get elected to office.

I won't, for a few reasons:
- It is life-consuming.
- I don't think any country is worth it, and if they are, they would not appreciate the work I do for them.
- I am not a Christian virgin-till-marriage type of girl. Therefore, no one would vote for me.
- It is dangerous.

So for now, the only office I am aiming at is Class President.

I'm planning on running for my city's school board. You only need 100 signatures to make it on the ballot. Now when I run is the only thing that's really up in the air. There is a recall vote happening the day of the state primary (Aug. 8) and there are 5 members up for recall. If they are recalled, they will be filling 5 seats in November. If not, then I will run in the regular spring school board election, in which 2 members' terms are up. The local newspaper actually runs rather long pieces on the candidates, there is little if any campaigning, and I figure I might as well take a shot at it. I was a student in our school district for 13 years...if that doesn't qualify me to help make decisions about its future, I don't know what does.

Other than that...I did telephone polling for last year's Detroit mayoral race. I called people for I think 2 hours before I actually got one poll done. All in all, I made over 200 phone calls in a matter of 7 hours, and I only got 6 polls done. It was kind of fun though, we were all sitting around dialing numbers and talking to each other (because no one really answers unknown cell phone calls on a Saturday afternoon...). I kept saying that one of these times I was going to say my name was something other than Meagan. The first time I said my name was Vanessa and everyone sitting near me starts laughing at me, which made me start laughing...but the person wasn't registered to vote, so it didn't even matter. I'll probably do it again next year...for the gubenatorial (sp) race. It was easy "service learning" hours...and we got donuts and pizza. It was a good experience...I will never hang up on a political phone caller ever again.
