2006 Elections

The election season has come to an end, one of the most vicious battles for congress since the inception of the mass media. We saw probably the worst of politicians this year and it really does make me sad, for the lack of a better word. Attack ads however nauseating became merely entertaining by the end of the season, major news networks running stories playing some of the more vicious ones over and over.

This election went to the democrats on what I feel is one large principle: The American people voted for change. How incredibly simplistic that explanation is yet so incredibly true. However you would be hard pressed to find anyone in politics willing to expound upon that simplistic assessment because it would mean they would be obligated to provide a suggestion that would in fact be a change of course in any aspect of government.

Without getting in depth on any individual topic the fact remains that the democrats don’t have a better answer, hell they don’t even have a different one most of the time. You’ll notice that besides the Iraq war the democrats’ agenda consists of things that they didn’t even really campaign on. Things like raising the minimum wage, reforming health care, and above all trying to be bi-partisan, something that they have no choice on.

I bring up the partisanship issue for a few reasons. Primarily because we have spent the last 12 years with a republican controlled congress that has been more than willing to snub their counterparts every chance they got. Suddenly however America spoke, and they were tossed aside in one of the most unexpected defeats in history at least from the republican perspective. (Minus John Ashcroft getting beat by a dead guy, that was a burner.)

But the democrats need to stop celebrating in a real hurry. Pelosi has already suffered her first major defeat of the next congress, and they aren’t even in power yet. Her little power play involving Murtha was a complete wash and only served to strengthen my conviction that she is unfit to lead a district of liberal Californians much less an entire congress. Apparently she forgot that in her quest to get more “democrats” into congress she enlisted some of the more moderate members that the house has seen in over 12 years.

I hope this rude awakening will cause her to reconsider her liberal agenda and realize that just because GWB managed to screw the country one way does not mean that they have to screw the country the other way to balance it out. Eventually Americans will get sick of getting screwed in uncomfortable orifices.

The senate is not any better off either. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) who some are calling the architect of the democrats take over of the senate (Essentially the Karl Rove of the dems without the underhanded tactics.) also enlisted the help of many moderate senators. This causes me to jump for joy to see my political affiliation to finally be represented in congress. However it is highly unlikely that these members legislation will ever be supported by either side due to the party loyalists being put in positions of power.

The most notable of these issues is that of Jane Harmon. Harmon served as the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee during the last two years, and due to playing ball with the Bush administration on a couple of occasions it has been suggested she will be passed up by Pelosi for the position of Chairperson. Instead it would be given to Alcee Hastings a former judge who was impeached, but after all she is a loyalist.

Now I feel the need to pray for some strange reason, I can’t explain it, after all I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination.
