In 1990, Iraq was a sovergn nation coming off a victory over the USSR(attempting to invade Afghanistan and surrounding areas) with help of the UN and US. Iraq was left w/o a leader or a direction. So, the UN used the young and up-in-coming Saddam Hussein to fill the void of leadership. 2 years latter, Saddam has invaded Iraq and there have been threats made against Israel in weapons and words. Hussein had alined himself w/ Arafat, helping to pay off families of Palestinian suicide bombers. Years latter, documentation surfaces about Iraqi and opposition torture O.K.ed by Saddam.
The UN put Saddam in office, something that has seemingly been forgotten throughout this war. Yet, the UN still remained present in Iraq through the actions of France, Germany, and Russia. How? All three of these countries made negotiations with Saddam that if they vetoed any proposal made to allow the US or UN to supply forces into Iraq, and if they helped lift UN sanctions off Iraq, then Saddam would set aside two or more of his best oil fields for their use.
Today, the UN has taken little action against these bribes nor have they addressed Saddam's fate. The UN has seemingly shifted attention from rebuilding and aiding in the rebuilding of Iraq, to playing the blame game against the US. Anyone else think this is a bit shaddy and that possibly the UN is trying to cover up their tracks by focusing on the actions of Bush?
