I'm debating whether or not to run for school board again, but I know this time, two of the guys sitting on the school board are more than likely apt to run (two-three seats are up each year), so it'd be much harder to face an incumbent. Then again, after only losing by 19 votes last year in a four-way race, I would be considered the "front-runner." Not only that, but the upcoming school bond election will prove critical to my plans. If our Feb. 7 $80 million 14-cent-tax-increase-if-it-passes bond election fails I will ride the momentum into the May election. If not, then I don't know what my chances are; I'll be praying about it, though. BUT, because of my strong showing last year, I have been given a platform in the local papers to oppose this latest bond election; there was a bond election last year that failed horribly, and I was the only candidate to vote against it. I was appointed to the school board's Districtwide Education Improvement Council and the countywide Local Emergency Planning Committee. Not too bad. Stay tuned: http://www.joeydauben.com

Like the new site, Joey. It looks much more professional. I just joined my local precinct committee, and I'm a delegate to the county convention next month. I might be the youngest delegate, since I'm still 17... Local politics is great fun, and hearing you talk about it on here gets me even more excited! -puffin

Good luck running this year. I agree with a lot of your arguments and hope you win.

Oh, and don't worry, I plan on going to college, but Student Council in high school is a huge popularity contest and totally ceremonial; you have to do what the Administration tells you. I was elected to Student Council, but because of the director's resignation for having sex with a football player, things were thrown off track. Of course, when I do hit college, I'll be more active and set up a Young Conservatives organization, a College Republicans chapter if there already isn't one, and run for the Student Government Association. All of you are witnessing the creation and upbringing of a truly honest, God-fearing, Constitution-supporting politician, and I don't say this out of ego ... ...I say it out of excitement. You might not agree with my views and stances on issues, but you can't ignore that there is major news worthiness outta this http://www.joeydauben.com

Bushsupporter, thank you for your comments; magnus, thanks for sticking up for me. You gotta see how this all fits, per se, in what I'm trying to do here. I ran in 2002, just to put my name on the ballot, and received 4 percent of the vote in a three-way race. I ran in 2003, armed with a clear and concise message (anti higher taxes), newspaper support (I'm a reporter for the county's largest paper), endorsements from local public officials, was able to run a four-way race only to lose by 19 votes. That's not bad, and I can assure you, from the people I meet, they noticed big time. I wasn't trying to prop up my ego here; when I spent $1,000 on signs, brochures, etc. on my campaign, I was either going to win the race, or become a "community leader." Coming 19 votes away from being the youngest school board member in the state of Texas will make you feel proud of after-election accomplishments. Since the education improvement council appointment and the local emergency planning committee appointment, I have taken over as director of our famous citizen's group: Responsible Individuals for a Greater Home Town The RIGHT Group I figured, by posting this thread, that the people on YouthNOISE could see first-hand a real youth-oriented campaign. http://www.joeydauben.comThat's my new campaign site; check it out if you guys have time.

Student government at my school is such a joke, I resigned from my position as vice president because I got tiered of getting up at 5 in the morning so I could go here grumpy teenagers agrue over the color of the trim on our homecomming float.
I'm on site-based council which actually adresses important issues and poliies. School board is also a good oportunity at my school, but I don't do that. I just go to school board and planning committe (for our new school) meetings to keep up and make sure voices are being heard.

Joey:
On one hand, I find it admirable that you are entering politics at such a young age. But I think your electoral efforts would be better spent running for Student Government offices and making your case to the young people.
Also, I think you should either enlist in the military after high school or attend college, enroll in ROTC, serve a stint as an officer. Or if you can't meet the medical requirements for the military, then serve a stint as a police officer (I consider police work to be equal to military service myself, especially in the inner cities).
You also might want to work towards a MPA or a Master's in Public Policy to get an understanding of the inner workings of government. Maybe even get some business experience.
Then I think you will be a formidable candidate for local elected office or for a seat in the state legislature.
I'm not a fan of the Libertarian Party or Libertarianism. But I like people who run against the two-major parties. Good luck.

I didn't say that it is inappropriate to tell us that he is running for school board, I merely said that lifting one's self up onto a pedastool and masking it as relevant news or a deep social critique is pretty transparent. If he would have said, "I am running again for school board because I think that it is important for young people to get involved, if I win I think that it could be a good wake up call to the carrer school board members that they need to take the youth seriously. I only lost by a little last time and the media is now taking me seriously, so I hope that I can pull it out and show everyon what young people are made of," then I wouldn't have cared. But he didn't say that whether it be because he isn't running to "show up all those adults who treat us like kids" or because he likes to laud himself on his political endeavors. That is all I said. I congratulate him on running, but I deplore him for waving it in the face of us all, as if his opinions are more important.

Most people on here feel like this is a community and therefore are interested in what going on in other peoples life’s in this community. As much as me and Joey disagree on a lot of issues I still find it interesting to see what he is up too, gives me a perspective on what people on the other political spectrum do, how they live etc. Besides if you don't pull any relevance from it that’s your problem, or here's a novel idea, DONT READ IT. Also I believe Joey's purpose for posting this was to show people that even if you are young you can have an impact, mixed with a little bit of natural self promotion to it as well. But to save any more *****ing from Bushsupporter I suggest before anymore of your posts, which are of this nature, Joey, put a BSP (Blatant Self Promotion) in the subject.

Who the hell do you think you are. You should take a step back and listen to yourself. I don't think that I have experienced such disgist and disbeleif in a long time. It isn't so much the "concept"of the post, but more the way that it has been handled. I guess I don't mind you talking about your plans to run for school board if you can tie it in with something relevant to the rest of us. But that is certainly not what was done here. quote: I was appointed to the school board's Districtwide Education Improvement Council and the countywide Local Emergency Planning Committee. Not too bad.
This is insulting. Who talks about thenmselves like this. I am very supportive of your ideas here on youthnoise joey, you know that. We agree on a lot of issues, but this just crosses the line. And I cannot beleive that I am the only one to express outrage at this attempt at self proclaimed glory. I also find the comparison you made regarding you and Howard Dean quite humorous. Dean has really done nothing when you think about it. Ideas don't mean to much and you know that. All that matters is votes. He doesn't have any, and you better hope that you are unlike the "flash in the pan" dean campaign. "Freedom is not Free"-Korean War Memorial, Washington DC.

Wee, I'm running again, I made it official today.
My pledge will be NOT to vote to raise ANY tax of ANY kind.
See if the other candidates support that.

Here's the latest Midlothian Today story that I was in, regarding the $80 million bond election: quote: Dauben sends school board message By ALLEN TAYLOR News Editor
People and taxpayer groups opposed to Midlothian school district’s Feb. 7 $80 million bond election have chosen a theme for their efforts: “Send them a message.”
“With the help of the Taxpayers Alliance for Good Government (TAGG) members, the Republican Liberty Caucus and local Libertarians, we’re going to send Midlothian ISD a message that the people are fed up and we’re not going to sit back and allow our elected leaders to keep raising taxes. If that means voting against each and every bond election, so be it,” opposition organizer Joey Dauben said.
Dauben lost a bid for MISD school board trustee by 19 votes last year.
“We know there’s growth, we know there are more kids enrolling in our schools, but nobody has yet to focus on the tax rate,” Dauben said. “I think our government has forgotten who they work for.”
MISD’s tax rate is $1.72 per $100 of property valuation, and if the bond propositions pass, school officials predict a 13.7-cent total tax increase in the interest and sinking portion.
The impact the first year will be 6.8 cents and the second year will be 6.9 cents, MISD Assistant Superintendent of Finance Larry Keiser said.
That means on a home valued at about $150,000, the monthly tax increase will amount to a little more than $6.50 in 2004 and slightly more in 2005.
Aside from the tax issue, Dauben said there is one more important facet of the bond election to look into.
“All of these bond elections beg the question, what do we get in return for our investment?” he said. “Our students might be passing more ridiculous standardized exams, and campuses are looking nicer with those splashy ‘look what we did’ rating banners, but will $43 million for high school renovations really produce what the education establishment claims is being conducted there?”
The campaign theme, Dauben said, was devised after reading a recent Time Magazine interview with Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean.
“Nobody expected this Dean guy to come up from a little place like Vermont and make the effect he has on the presidential race, and the same can be said for my campaign last year,” Dauben said. “Nobody talked about taxes until my campaign harped and harped and harped on it. Locally and semi-secretly, citizens were upset, but it wasn’t until my anti-higher taxes campaign started heating up before people started getting the message, and the theme for this opposition effort is that: to send our school district, our political establishment and our community a message that taxpayers have had enough.
“The giant has finally awaken,” Dauben said.
