All right, first off, I'm anti-stem cell research. I right stories and novels, and in one of my novels there is a character with hemophilia. Naturally, I would do research on hemophilia before writing this book. In my research, I've learned about something called, "clotting factor replacement therapy" which is where they inject clotting factors, VIII or IX, depending on if they have Hemophilia A or B. Sometimes, the body creates anti-bodies called "inhibitors" against replacement clotting factors, making them useless. In this case, they use something called “Recombinant Factor VIIIa.” It’s produced by baby hamster kidney cells. This means that they kill the baby hamsters, to get the kidney cells.

I’m not an animal person. The only animals I like are hamsters, so I have mixed emotions about this. It helps save the lives of hemophiliacs, but it kills the baby hamsters. It wouldn’t be as touchy except that they’re baby hamsters.

What are environmentalists and anti-stem cell people, and just everyone in general’s thoughts about this? Do you think that we should try to find a different way to create Recombinant Factor VIIIa? I know this might be stupid of me to feel sorry for the hamsters, so just say so if it’s true.

Just to clarify. Hamsters are about the only animals I can stand. However, I'll go with the saving the human. I'm just saying, why don't we find some other way to make the medications?

I love people and animals so this was tough. I feel like people are very important. But to know that they can't take a dead hamster makes no sense. Why would that hurt? I know the people need life and these hamsters are dying for a good cause but how are they to understand that? I know if I had a family member or friend with this disease then I might not worry too much about the hamster but like I said why do they have to kill a hamster instead of taking an already dead hamster and using it. Whatever, it's a good cause and they're saving people. I can only hope there are enough hamsters to go around!

Define "almost sure". Are you telling me that you wouldn't kill a load of hampsters for a 20% chance that you might survive a terminal disease? How about a loved one, or a complete stranger?

Hmm...I'm sort of on the fence about this one. I mean, I value all life and it seems wrong to kill hamsters for our own benefit, but at the same time it doesn't seem right to let a child die when there's something that can be done about it. So I guess this is where I stand: as long as hemophelia isn't a common birth defect (I'm unaware of the statistics) and assuming it is almost a SURE way to help a patient (as opposed to just a feeble attempt) I suppose it would be OK to sacrafice the lives of hamsters.

Anyway, I'm all for killing hamsters to save humans. That's all hamsters are good for in my opinion...no offence or anything.

If dead hamsters make healthy humans, I'm all for it. Hemophilia is a nasty thing.
