People are arguing whether tobacco should be banned or not. But tobacco's been around since 6000 bc and smoking around since 1 bc. Tobacco has only become a problem because of the addition of nicotine. So then, shouldn't instead nicotine be considered to be banned?

take nicotine out of cigarettes? wtf

the only reason people obtain pleasure from smoking is because nicotine has certain effects on the organism.

I was a smoker for 5 years(started when i was 14 and quit 5 months ago in June), I smoked over a pack a day, typically between 1 and a half and two.

The psychological addiction is the hardest part to get over, it has nothing to do with the phisicall adiction produced by nicotine, your body can break the nicotine need in 2 weeks, but you mind has become accustomed to having cigarettes as part of your life, you often find yourself holding your hand in a two finger split, as if you where holding a cigarette, and you develope a habit of puting pen's and pencil's in your mouth as if they where cigarettes, this is unconscious.
Think that if you smoke for a long time cigarettes become an integral part of your behaviour, you get used to smoking after a meal, or when you wake up in the morning, and when you stop doing so you have to forcefully change your aquired habits, and this is obviously quite difficult.
Ultimately if you have the willpower you can quit with relative ease, this doesn't mean it's not difficult to stop thinking about cigg's constantly when you have abstinence, and feeling nervous and shaky, but you can force yourself to ignore these simptoms.

Also, the common belief that addiction is something that develope's very quickly is a lie, you have to effectively smoke for over a year to have anything resembling a serious addiction, the mind takes a long time to fully integrate smoking into it's common routine.

I really think Nicotine should be taken out of cigarettes 'cause it's causing people to not be able to quit easily even if they want to.

How about not allowing tobacco companies to add things to make you addicted.

That would definitely help to make it a CHOICE, not a need. Anything that makes nicotine delivered to the brain faster, and of course nicotine itself, should be removed from tobacco products in my opinion.

And no smoking ads at all. Would that help?

Supposedly that's already being acted upon throught the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement between states and I believe the four largest tobacco producers/distributors. However, it continues on throughout the world. The next areas it is estimated to hit hardest is China and a some other Southeast Asian and African countries because the advertising is based off of American ads because many people in those areas idolize Americans. And in some other countries, cigarettes are distributed for free for a while, and then they stop giving it to them and set up markets on it and people continue to buy it because they are addicted by that time.

Indeed. Here is a partial list of chemicals that can be found in cigarettes. It really is staggering just browsing through them.
But I know several people who make their own cigars, and putting nicotine in them is not one of the things they do. They know that tobacco isn't very good for them, but they enjoy the taste/smell of it, and I respect that. Would banning cigarette smoke also ban making cigars?
I don't think they'd be very happy if that was the case.

That would seem to be the best scenario. That would allow people to still smoke (if they like it that much), but at least they wouldn't be addicted to it. Sure, Big Tobacco would lose money, but at least they would save some money on lawsuits.

Good job, k9, I've been waiting to hear this from someone else. You're right, and I've been thinking it for a while; nicotine should be removed from any product in my opinion. It alone can kill someone.

Ipper, how would that be equivalent to "ban[ning] smoking all together"?

I would not favor but would also not oppose a public smoking ban; as in parks, sidewalks and such. But I adamantly oppose banning smoking in ANY private establishment by rule of law. That would include any bar, restraunt or club.

I think that we should go back to just stuffing tobacco leaves in cigarettes instead of adding a whole bunch of other junk of which some has been proven to cause cancer. Tar? Acetone? Ammonia? Most interesting.

nah...but i do support public smoking bans. smoking is gross and trashy but people have the right to pursue it...in private and as long as it doesn't bother me.
