I don't know about the middle ages one.
Influenza can definitely kill,in any times.But common cold is not the same as influenza,the former is mild and usually can easily be cured.

What does the common cold have to do with AIDS? Though, I have read, if you want me to site it I will, that, people who survived the plague, and their decendence, are immune to AIDS, because of a mutation in the genome.
