Yea, well the UN is pretty much useless when it comes to anything. I really don't expect them to take any significant action. They are actually trying to work with the Sudan government, which is just ridiculous, considering how corrupt they are. If the US wasn't in a war with Iraq, I'm sure that we would be the ones stepping in b/c nobody else ever has the balls to do anything. They would just keep on letting things like this happen.

It's a pretty complicated issue, but on the website savedarfur.org, they explain it perfectly quote: Nearly three years into the crisis, the western Sudanese region of Darfur is acknowledged to be a humanitarian and human rights tragedy of the first order. The humanitarian, security and political situation continue to deteriorate: atrocities continue, people are still dying in large numbers of malnutrition and disease, and a new famine is feared. According to reports by the World Food Program, the United Nations and the Coalition for International Justice, 3.5 million people are now hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced due to violence, and 400,000 people have died in Darfur thus far. The international community is failing to protect civilians or to influence the Sudanese government to do so. This is the current situation, and there is more if anyone wants to read the rest of the article, it is very good and explains alot. click here! And even better, there are ways for us to get involved in raising awareness and even writing to our government. This is the best and most important thing we can do right now considering most of us our still in high school or college. The fact that there are a scarce amount of people who have even heard about this is just sad and alarming. This has been raging on for over 3 years. We all should be aware of this. Anyway, here's where you can go to get involved: click here! Click on "high school students" or "college students" depending on where you fall. Although I recommend clicking on college b/c there is more there.

OK I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN I AM SO SICK OF HEARING ABOUT THIS STUFF AND NO ONES DOING ANYTHING OUR GOVORMENT IS SO SO SO SO SO FRUSTERATING OMG!!!!! these people need help and no ones helping them we need to stop this genoside! quote: Originally posted by Holliewood: quote: Originally posted by YouthVoice: Guys! The Sudanese government and two of the main Darfur rebel factions signed a peace agreement on May 5 to end three years of fighting. I know that it is not the end, they still have to live up to it. But it's a start. I'm so glad. unfortunately, both sides have signed a ceasefire agreement before and that has not been enough to stop the fighting. I'm glad there is something about Darfur on this site and that you guys are aware. Before this year, I had no idea that this was going on. I did a presentation on this a few months ago and it just shook me up when I was looking up all the information and seeing the pictures. It's a shame that there is so little the rest of the world can do for these poor people. I, personally, think that there has been enough proof that the Sudan government is very corrupt. It is definetly time for the international community to get involved. If not, then who is going to help these people? The government are the ones doing the killing. Its so ridiculous!

ok, this is way more important than gas prices. I'm bumping it up. This is the biggest issue regarding humanity right now and surprisingly not many people know about it.

The rally got less attention than the immigration rally. @#%T$!! But I agree with you about the peace agreement - even though it's not a guarantee, it's definitely cracking the surface.

The global education program at my alma mater was the first in our area to recognize the problem in Darfur. Around this time last year, one of the teachers started selling those Livestrong-like bracelets that said "Not on my watch-Save Darfur". Our group getting ahold of those bracelets got the idea spread around our school in a matter of days. We were all very involved in politics and so we would display our bracelets and when people would ask us about them, we would inform them about the genocide and everything occuring with it (located on the convenient information cards that you get with the bracelets).
I don't know how much we actually did...but at least we got the story out there...

seeing those pictures hurt my feelings.i cant believe humans can do that to each other.there are so many things i wish i could do. but unforturnately, not much i can do to help, except donate money for relief and pressure my representatives, which i have been doing. it is a depressing topic. to think that people can do that to each other. but its better to think positively because soon there will be a brighter day. it is better to laugh. not laugh at them, laugh in spite of them.
