It is well know that the East is expanding. The middle class in China is growing with exceeding rapiditiy and this amy lead to an economic tip from the US to China. I know many of you will not agree, but from an outside perspective, this is how it appears.

Since China may well be the biggest block in a new booming east, a large political powershift will happen, turning things in favour of China. Therefore, should we all learn Mandarin instead of say, French or Spanish as a second language? I know that last year the first secondry school in England began to teach Mandarin instead of French as thir second language. Opinions? No doubt many...

well if you knew mandarin you could talk to 2 billion more people than you normally could.

i believe french should be the universal language because it's the official language of the un and more people in the world can speak french as a primary or secondary language than any other.

It's true that Mandarin is very important now because of the economy and such. But still, I think there shouldn't just be one choice, only learning Mandarin. Everyone should, like it is now, pick what language they want to take. Being interested is most important to successful learning!

I think you are right. English isn't spoken everywhere and Americans only put time into learning French or Spanish while Mandarin, an extremely important language in our world, is left behind. How smart is that?

Well, insted of being forced to take Mandarin there should just an added option of Manderain along with French and Spanish.
Then again I have a warped view, for I'm half asian, and I dont speak Manderain. I say if kids want it let it be! Especially if they are intrested in learning a language! Some kids compleatly hate languages. Some only would like to know one or two.

... Now that I think about it, is there such thing as knowing no language?...

Logic isn't based on grammar, but grammar should be based on logic. Not complicated logic, simple logic. If there is a rule that "a" sounds like "ah" it should always sound like that. That's what i mean by logic.

English, also, is not really "composed" of different languages. It's merely incorporated some vocabulary from others as it's come in contact with different cultures around the globe. It's still basically a germanic language in structure though. It's by no means a mish-mash of various tounges.

English is illogical because it's one of the most flexible, diverse, and descriptive languages out there. And certainly the most prolific. It makes sense to make it the global language.

i don't think i could ever learn mandarin in writing form. everything is too picture like and i would just mess it up. however it would be cool to learn just so you could converse with 2 billion more people.

i take mandarin chinese as my 2nd language. it is quite unique.
