While tragedies occur around the world, no travelers/vacationers expect to die on a 4 day trip by the incompetent hands of others. That’s what makes the truthful facts of the senseless death of eight year old Brent McCoy Midlock so very dismal. The Mexican Government needs to enforce some very strong criminal charges to the Occidental Corporation and those who operate the Occidental Grand Xcaret. There is absolutely no question of who carries the burden of fault/guilt in this tragedy and criminal charges need to be invoked. The construction of a swimming pool with 12 inch diameter, underwater, concealed drain pipes, without covers goes well beyond gross negligence. The design, construction, maintenance, operation and management of the salt water pool are contributing factors to Brent’s death
The Mexican Officials must be encouraged to have the courage and strength to convict all of the people who were involved in designing, building, maintaining and operating the swimming pool. A special child, such as Brent McCoy Midlock should still be on this earth doing good deeds and helping others, but the Occidental Grand Xcaret shattered all of Brent’s hopes and dreams along with his family’s and many friends.
Our son was killed more than two years ago and the details of his demise are horrific. We have recovery photos, proof of lies, and interviews with witnesses. It is interesting to note that neither Brent’s family nor guests who witnessed the entire tragedy were ever spoken to, even though all of the documentation that has been collected was submitted to the State Attorney General of Quintana Roo. The final investigative report that was submitted to the judge in Cancun identified the maintenance man as the only individual responsible for criminal negligence. The judge dismissed the indictment charge and the Mexican prosecutor is appealing the case.
We are appealing to you, the media to communicate with the Procurador de Justicia (State Attorney General) and Governor of Quintana Roo requesting a realistic, impartial investigation that encompasses all of the guilty parties. Should they not be willing to cooperate then we implore you to cover this story until the officials in Quintana Roo understand that Brent’s death must be acknowledged by fair and truthful justice (i.e. indictments for all of the guilty). In addition, all U.S. citizens must be made aware of the “treadmill” the Mexican Government has put this case on. Without question, there have been many senseless deaths of innocent people caused by negligence and it will continue until the Quintana Roo Officials understand that their behavior is not acceptable, and will no longer be tolerated. They are directly defying, justice, regard for a child’s life, and the irrefutable truth.
Our goal is to save the lives of others and the unmentionable hardship that has overwhelmed this community. We ask that letters, phone calls and more delays stop with you by media involvement and proactively embracing this situation. While our country is absorbed in the Holloway nightmare we have traveled a similar journey. The officials in Quintana Roo need to know that while their focus for tourism is heavily promoted in the United States our media cannot allow justice to not prevail. Be assured that not only United States citizens will applaud your efforts, but the entire world most certainly will appreciate your concern and dedication to saving lives.
