I'd like to learn Scottis Gaelic, but I'm afraid it would go the way of my failed attempts to learn Sindarin Elvish (pretend, I know, but oh well. . .). I love the Celtic languages and culture, as a lot of my family background is Scottish (and a bit of Irish). I think Gaelic, either dialect, is beautiful. Any suggestions of good sites that teach Scottish Gaelic?

Actually, I've been learning Irish Gaelic online on a site, and the Irish on that site call it Irish and say that it's always called Irish in Ireland.

Aaahhh, but Celtic, Scottish Gaelic is pronounced Gallic.

Well, there's Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic. How to save it? Well, you can learn by yourself by buying one of the Talknow CD-roms for your PC (they've a site, google it), or by searching for poetry and the like in Irish Gaelic.

Sorry to say, I've never seen this thread before. I'm obsessed with all things Irish and desperately want to learn Gaelic (known as Irish to those who don't know any better ). So what's going on and how do we save it?

I'm quite interested in lingiustics. I just got a book called Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages, and I'm really looking forward to reading it. If there are some interesting facts in it, I'll let you know. Anyway, I'm always interested in learning new languages, but I'm quite interested in learning Welsh in particular. I think there are some books on it in my school library, I'll check them out next time I'm there.

I wrote a paper about the influences of Celtic on English. Would you like to read it if I gave you a link?

I know some Scottish Gaelic, Irish, and Welsh. I agree that it would be a damn shame if these (or any) language died. I doubt Irish and Welsh and Scottish will, as they're still sort of used today, but the rest we might as well make a tombstone for. Every language changes, some die if not used. If these dialects do cease to be used, we can be happy that at least they influenced other languages, such as modern English.
