Hi everyone ... I'm new to YouthNoise and these boards, so I'm really interested in getting to know you guys better. Anyways, I am planning a project called Ophelia's VOice, and I was wondering if anyone else is doing something similar so we could chat over e-mail, share resources, that kind of thing. Ophelia's Voice is (going to be) a youth-led discussion group for teen girls ages 12 - 14. My goal is to empower teen girls to have confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, and an awareness about issues such as sexuality, body image, violence, or feminism, to name a few. Right now I'm in the planning stages, working to get a partnership and such. Is anyone else planning a similar project or have ideas for Ophelia's Voice? I'd love to hear your comments! Thanks everyone. Joanne

You're right, I totally agree with you ... the point is, it's "Ophelia's Voice" in the sense that we are trying to empower "her", get her away from that crap, build self-confidence, etc. Then "Reviving Ophelia" isn't exactly the most fitting title for Mary Pipher's book. Thanks for your comments.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Do you know of any youth grants, funding sources, or organizations I could approach about this? Also, each month with Ophelia's Voice is considered a monthly theme, with all discussions, activities, or guest speakers revolving around this theme. Here is my rough plan for the themes ... what do you think? Any other topics I should include? September - Identity/Individuality (self-discovery, yoga, journaling, etc). October - Media Awareness November - Body Image/Self Esteem December - Relationships January - Violence/Safety February - Sexuality March - Feminism April - Substance Abuse May - Mental Health Issues (suicide, depression, self-mutilation) June - Global Awareness/Leadership (volunteering, activism, etc) If you want more info, I can e-mail you some MS Word documents on other stuff I've compiled. Thanks again for your interest! Joanne

Hey ... awesome that you want to get involved. I'm actually looking for some grants/orgs/funding sources I can approach right now, I'm hoping to start up in September. I have two uni grad students and another friend helping me, but if you find anything that looks helpful (a youth grant program, for example - keeping in mind I live in Alberta, Canada) I'd love to hear from you. If you are really interested and want to get involved, e-mail me (eternal_flame_07@hotmail.com) and I can attach some MS Word documents of some things I've started so far or explain further about the goals, objectives, etc. So let me know how you want to get involved in the project, if you feel we could via e-mail or something. Thanks again for your interest.

I loved the book reviving ophelia. I read it when i was 13 or 14, and as well and gettign me interested in psychology and psychiatry, it helped me to keep from getting sucked into the typical world of most adolescent girls.

Ophelia is a character from Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. In the play she was portrayed as a docile and eager to please. If you've heard of the book "Reviving Ophelia: Saving The Selves of Adolescent Girls" (Mary Pipher)or "Ophelia Speaks: Adolescent Girls Write About Their Search For Self" (Sara Shandler) it's been widely used as a metaphor kind of thing for adolescent girls, oppression, etc. I wanted to call it Ophelia's Voice because, originally, "Reviving Ophelia" was the book that first gave me awareness of these issues, and also because I wanted to empower/give a voice to this metaphorical "Ophelia". Thanks for your comments, everyone! Joanne

Sounds like a great project.
Why are we dying to live, if we're just living to die?
