Why are people so slow in making cars that dont need gas?

First off, Outlaw may have made a point he wasn't intending. By driving a Honda, he's saving the economy in a small way. It's a proven fact that imports use up less fuel than American cars. And thus, if we all drove cars with good fuel economy, drilling in ANWR would be pointless and then we wouldn't need this pathetic board to argue about it on. Finally, we got dragged off topic in some weird and irrelevant liberal rag. So, I'll comment on the fallacies of it like a good liberal should when confronted with smelly, pick-up driving Southerners.

Rock Faerie makes an interesting point here. Regardless of whether or not we are destroying wildlife in Alsaka, we are going to ruin the environment wherever we drill, even in the desert. Why should we rely strictly on other countries for a resource we use more of than anybody? Makes no sense.

Whoa, whoa, slow down there, red. You're putting words into my mouth. Where did I say America's environment is worse than Russia's? Where? Point it out to me, 'cause I don't see it. What I said was this: help Russia get the oil in their country. There are huge oil deposits in Russia but the Russians have inefficient methods of getting it out. America has extremely efficient ways of getting our oil, but oil is running low in North America. Russia's already screwed environmentally, so let's help them instead of screwing around in a wilderness reserve. I'm sure that when someone sets aside land for a reserve, they didn't mean for it to be taken over by oil companies.

No, a Hummer does not get 2 mpg. That would be 60 mi. on a 30 gallon tank. That is absurd. I want to drive an SUV and am willing to pay the price of gas for it. Case closed. It isn't like the government gives free gas to SUV owners. They have to pay for the price themselves. I think that you might just be jealous that you cannot afford to drive the car of your dreams.

RockFaerie, the US is the luckiest nation in the world when it comes to gas. $1.95 for a gallon? That's hella cheap. $2.19? Cheap. Hell, three bucks would be cheap. Ever been to Europe? Gas there is over four euros a liter. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that comes out to be, oh, about twenty USD a gallon. The US can stand some increases in gas prices.

Also, just how long did you live in Alaska? 'Cause you don't know the first thing about the Reserve. "A bunch of ice"? Personally, I think the government would set aside a reserve only if there was more than ice. Contrary to very popular belief, Alaska is not just one big ice floe. I lived there for 7 years and I saw snow only in the winter. Add to this that there actually isn't that much usable oil in the Reserve. What do you get when you add 2 to 2? Yeah, that's right, a ruined wilderness for a few years' worth of oil.

Here's my proposal: leave Alaska alone and let's all go help Russia tap the enormous oil deposits in their country. Haven't we ruined enough of America for our precious oil?

Or how about an even better idea. Let's ditch the gas guzzling SUVs and sports cars. Know how Europe copes with expensive gas? SMART cars, hybrids, tiny cars with lots of miles to the gallon. I drive a Geo Metro. The thing may be small and ghetto, but it gets 30 miles to the gallon. How much does a Hummer get? Two, three miles to the gallon? If we cut back on oil consumption, the whole Reserve drilling point is moot.
