I tend to be too arrogant to respect most people.

No respect should be given automatically, whether you trust them or not is irrelevant. If I approached you to talk to you, and you looked like you could give a crap about what I had to say then that doesn't give a very good impression... I shouldn't have to EARN anyones respect, I should have to maintain it.

because it sounds like she could give a crap, people like that tend to have a disagreement and then use that as a reason not to show a little common coourtesy where that person is involved.

You should respect your parents until the day they die. And, even after you have a life of your own, you still have to respect your boss.

Most people have to earn it with me, but some people I see in authority I know I need to respect them without them having to earn it. By being in that position and teaching me or whathaveyou, they've already earned it. When it comes to those people I go by the, "Respect until they disrespect you," rule.

My post from another thread still stands here.

I feel there are some you need to respect until they disrespect you (most of them fall into the "elders" category) but I also agree with Celtic that respect doesn't have to be doled out to certain age groups.

People, old and young alike, should earn each other's respect. The way the old can earn our r-e-s-p-e-c-t is by treating us like young adults, instead of kids, and we should treat them as valuable members of communtity instead of doddering old fools.

You have to dish out respect to get some in return. If you don't respect someone, chances are, they won't respect you.

Ofcourse there are cases where no respect is deserved, but I think those are far and few between.

I respect people who respect me, thats about it, so as adults have labeled me I have a problem with authority, which is sorta true, but whatever. I think you have a good point bauhaus, but some of those examples could be argued prolly. basic lesson shouldn't be "respect you elders" it should be "give respect and recieve it."
