Question:
I just overheard some strange and anstonishing news. Police officers found young children unattended and badly sun-burned and arrested the mother for a period of time. So is this ridiculous? A great idea? Too harsh? Too soft? What do you think?

Choices:
Yeah America! The police are finally doing a good job, the mother should have definetley known better.
That's crazy. She wasn't caught murdering someone! So does that mean I'm going to juvenile hall because I only had on SPF 8 today? Everyone has gotten sun-burn once in their lives, even with some protection. Some people have sensitive skin.
How do they know for sure it was really the mothers fault? Maybe she did give them sunscreen but just missed some areas, everyone makes mistakes you know.
Ok, sure jail is a good punishment, but what about adding a large fine? The kids could get skin cancer.
Umm.. arresting her isn't going to do anything. What she needs is some good parenting cources.

Too harsh, definitely.
But it does show the way the american judicial system is heading if you ask me.

Hey redjill, did you see the woman and her attorney on the Today show with Matt Lauer? SHe answered at most 3 questions by herself. Her attorney saved her from herself for the rest. It was very interesting to watch.

I still think it was way too harsh. She could have gotten about 15 years in prison. However, I ran across an article that says she was released and instead charged with a misdemeanor, which means she could be in jail for six months and be fined about $1,000 dollars. According to the hospitals, the children had only first degree burns on their faces. I think this woman should be fined, but not imprisoned. I've heard of much worse cases than this in which the defendant was barely charged. I think this is a bit ridiculous. ):/

From the link redjill provided, I don't think she left the kids unattended.

However, I suppose the police were doing what they thought was right. Afterall, the kids were very young.

Um, where did you hear this from? I can see the unattended thing, but sunburn? That's over the top. yet, I am skeptical until I have the sources.
