I knew a girl that cut herself during classes, she would use a samll knife and draw hearts in her legs and her boyfriend's initials or just big lines in her arm, at first I thought that she was just doing it to get attention because everyone kinda ignored her, she would get in trouble at school and most of the teachers really hated her, a year after that she got expelled. Later I started talking to her through the msn and she told me that she had been going to therapy for a long time and she had gotten over cutting herself. Now I'm really sorry I judged her and wasn't able to help her so don't be fooled by poseurs who just do it to be cool there are a lot of people who really need help and we can give it to them.

I agree with bluegirl. She talked about how hard it is to explain to someone who has never cut why people do it. I never have cut myself and am glad i've never had to resort to that but come from the other side. The side of people who just don't get it. Before i used to think that all people did it for attention and that it was stupid and something that was only mental but then i had someone explain to me in a way that made sense. They compared it to a young kid getting a needle. They don't want to think about the pain of a needle going into their skin so they'll pinch their leg or their other arm to be able to focus on something else. They said it was the same for people who cut. They need a distraction and thats the only way they can get it. I never got it until then. I can't speak from experience but i do know many people who have gone through the same thing. They found other ways to deal with it or other distractions. some turned to drawing, poetry or sports. I know that sounds cheesy but it really works.

This does not even have anything to do with exploitation of children. Take this discussion somewhere else.

I cut my self, and am trying to get over it. I have depression. Its so so so hard not to do it, but you feel relived when you tell someone. Most people who dont cut dont understand how any one could do it, but when your sad mad or Angry you dont think about what your doing to your self. I hate it when people cut to get attion or because they do it in a club or just think there cool. Cutting is really something depressed people have a hard time controlling. Its so very hard to exsplain unless your talking to a cutter. Its so commen in Teenagers this way. Its its like after you do it you feel better it stops your crying and it calms you down gets ur anger out. I know its not right. But its just so so hard. I hadn't been doing it latley untill the other day Frown I ruined it again I'm working on stoping nothing seams to help so, I'm going to a doctor for natural depression medication that wont take over my brain. Depressions not fun for any one who is going through hold strong we'll get through this .........................I turly hope, I want to know how it feels to actulie be happy and feel normale all the time. any more questions about cutting or anything anyones welcome to message me.

I think the only good think about self mutilation is that you aren't letting other people hurt you, which can be even worse.

Isnt this thread already on somewhere?
Any way self mutilation , a very harsh word . If people really do it for coping with life I guess its okay - not good but okay . I have a friend who does it for the kicks . She says she gets a rush.

I cut for three years before stopping. I've cut myself once in the past eight months, which I'm very proud of because Self Injury is a ***** to quit.

I wouldn't say it's a stupid thing to do, because in essence, it's just another way of coping. Some people drink, some people do drugs, some people hurt themselves to try to rid themselves of constant emotional pain.

I wouldn't say it's a smart thing to do. It's addictive, it's scary to be around, and when your day is centred on coming home and bleeding, you're really not in a good place.

So if you cut, get yourself into therapy. It's not worth the scars, the scares, the lies, and the worry you create for everyone around you.

Stupid. Very. Very close sighted, as in, you're not looking down the road at all. Dangerous, especially if you do some extreme forms of SI. I've heard stories. I've seen scars, and I've done it. Cutting is not the only way. There are so many other destructive methods out there. Just try it till you like one. Wait. No. Don't do it at all. Just... Give yourself time. Express yourself in other ways. Poetry. Art. Music. Youthnoise if it must be. Just... Don't do it.

for certain people, self-inflicted pain releases endorphins - ie, it makes them feel good. Those people almost universally have something wrong with them, be it severe trauma or problems in their brain or w/e. They need to be treated.

All the other self-mutilation is for social purposes and usually goes away by itself. Mostly it is along the lines of "I can freak my friends out by cutting myself".

No, I haven't gotten over it.

I think body modification (piercings, tattoos, scarification) as an artform is beautiful, I think self mutilation (cutting, burning, ext. as a way of dealing) is less than ideal. I have cut before, but don't know, so I understand the release it brings. However, the lasting reminders are horrible, and it is not a good way to deal.

I think that it's sad that that is the only way some kids know how to express themselves because they don't have anyone to talk to. I know how that feels.

lpchazychazlvr04- I'm sorry, but it sounds like you just want attention.

My own thoughts on self-mutilation- I think its a bad form of release. I understand that it feels good, but its only for the moment and the high doesnt last forever- but scars do. Seek therapy or help, support from your parents or friends.

It's not cool... my arms and legs are covere din scars... not just one or two scattered about but all over. Each of my cuts was at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and deep. I did with a razor blade i popped out of my razor. Physical pain hurts less than the emotional pain I had to deal with. Many of you may have read my other posts about my drug addictions and eating disorders etc. I regret cutting myself but I am glad I have been getting better I haven't cut in a month and a half. I used to get really annoyed by the poeple in school who would cut because it's cool and they saw the gothic kids doing it. I mean myself and a few other kids I knew did it because we felt like trash cans we were drug addicts and two of us had eating disorders, and felt so ugly we felt like we needed to hurt ourselves. If you ever feel like cutting call someone... they won't think your crazy trust me I had a long time figureing out that no one thought I was physco. Get help and get it soon before you end up in the hospital like I did because you went to far and cut to deep.
