I was thinking more along the lines of food in the "box" being "fridgid," thus came the word "fridge." But that's was simply my guess.

"fridge" was only just added to the dictionary as many other pre-slang words were. People started saying it a lot so they figured why not. It's not like they have a code of which words they can count as words or not. Some dictionaries say it is, some say it's not, some probably even spell it differently. But I guess the reason for the spelling variation is that lots of people think the right spelling is "refridgerator" so the abbreviated/slang version stayed the way people had already gotten used to spelling it out.
