I judge every single person I come across, all the time. This does not necessarily mean my judgment is accurate, as I am always open to reevaluate when given more data.
However, what's more important than judgment is tolerance - tolerance comes from whether you ACT on your judgment or not. Judgments by themselves are harmless unless they are acted upon, such as in the manner of harassment.
Also, regarding the specifics of clothing styles among high school students, something I have noticed is that people will dress themselves up for a certain clique largely because they DESIRE to be viewed upon as part of some clique; in other words, they WANT to be judged in a certain manner. Obviously, this observation is no absolute, and it certainly does not apply across the board - I know personally some exceptions to this. However, it is a general tendency I've noticed. You cannot usually rely JUST on what a person says out of their mouth - I gather much additional information for my judgments on body language, tones of voice, attitude, as well as basic reasoning (Why on earth would X be in situation Y if they verbally claim Z, which contradicts it?) and also minor observations of whether they practice what they preach. In many cases (at least for me), the collective information gathered from these sources paints a different picture than what a person will say verbally.
Just my two cents.

people shouldn't judge others quickly. it seems like every one got dat habit but as u grow to realizes judgin others to quickly will do nutin but hurt your self. knowone can look up to your perspectives, so u shouldn't try to make some one try to. people wounder why other people be so stuck up its because we expect so much out of people til they don'e know what to do anymore, so if u quit judgin people quickly people's wouldn't be dat way!!!!!!!!!1

I don't think it is wrong to judge people, because we all do it automatically as a reaction to what we see. What's wrong is deciding that this first impression is the correct one. I can look at someone and take a guess at what they're like, but I don't say to myself that it is any more than a guess. Judgements I make, I leave open to being changed. I rarely condemn someone completely (if I do, they have p*ssed me off many times over)… I don't judge people arrogantly, if that makes sense. I like to try to gage what they're like from the way they dress, their friends, anything, and then find out if I was right. Often I am, as I go by their body language too, which gives away clues to peoples' real personality, but there have been people I've made assumptions about who have then completely changed my opinion of them. This leads me to think that judging isn't the real problem, it's the arrogant assumption of that judgement being right, and it's the reluctance to later change it or admit to being wrong. Teenagers in high school can be very harsh in their judgements and I agree that this should change. A little open-mindedness shouldn't be too much to ask for, and it particularly sickens me when young people turn on someone en masse, without making any attempt to understand. It's an insult to ourselves, our self-control and our intelligence that we can't see another person's point of view, or stop ourselves from committing acts of pointless cruelty. It's worse as children - through high school I have seen a lot of people improve and learn to treat previous targets with greater respect, but there are still those who seem to see no shame in judging and victimizing people they don't understand. its just society. People are judged every day, but not for the things tha count. For examples, all Cheerleaders and Preps or taken as nasty people, but some of them are not. i know this makes no sense, but its wrong how people do that!

for the first time ever, i sorta agree with joey...weird...
people judge on looks, because it's the first impression. here at youth noise, we judge people based on what they write about, how they type, and the little piece of themselves that they put on their profile.
it's human nature to judge based on first appearance. is it accurate? sometimes, not always. is it fair? no. but we all do it. it's up to us to change it.

Personally, I think that the reason why people judge others so quickly is because:
1) They are not sure about themselves
2) They are jealous
3) It has happend to them before
4) It's all with pressure from friends.
5) They think that they are better than other people
Judging other people can be a personal thing...especially for students. You shouldn't judge at first sight...for you never know, you might end up liking the other person.

So stereotyping automatically means you're judging someone?
If I were to see an all-black-wearing, pale-faced, Doc Marten-laced "gothic" chic walking by, I would automatically asume they were, in fact, a part of the "Gothic" crowd.
If I were to see someone wearing flip-flops and a bright-colored polo with cargo shorts, I would probably assume they were a "preppy."
What if the "preppy" is actually the stupidest person (personality-wise) I would have ever met? That preppy stereotype would not fit anymore then, ay?
That's not judging. Judging is when you are like, "Goths" be dammed! You're going straight to Hell for wearing all black.
*shakes head*
Total brainwashing. This is what it is; total and complete thought-control.
God help us all.

We all do it cause we're human. If you went for an interview and you were wearing baggy pants and had greasy hair, do you think you would get the job? Probably not, cause you look like you don't care about your appearance. Same thing with someone who wears all black being goth and sweaters and khakis being preppy.
