Question:
There are alot of retarded children in the world. (sorry if I can't find a more politcally correct term) The children who are extremely retarded can't ever do anything on there own and live their whole lives completly dependent on their parents or relatives. So, if you knew your child would be born retarded and would be a lifelong burden on you...would you get an abortion? Why or why not? Thanks!! Wink

Choices:
Yes, no one deserves to live like that!
No, a life is a life!
I dunno!

Retarded means slow, and when I think somebody is thinking slowly, I call them retarded. It is not meant as an insult, but as a descriptive term.

yeah, I absoutely hate when people call other people "retarded" because of something stupid...

So do I, I'm forever telling people not to say that. I personally know two mentally challenged boys very well. One with Downs syndrom and another that I'm not sure what his condition is but he is severely challenged, can hardly even walk. I think that if the doctors knew my baby would be born mentally challenged I would have an abortion for the baby's sake, not because I would have to care for the kid for the rest of his/her life.

Yes, I would. That child would be born into a world of hate against retarded children, and I wouldn't want him to suffer.

I have a friend who is autistic and, even though nobody realizes it, he is [I]the[I] smartest kid I have ever known. And I won't even touch on the subject of a girl I know who's brother is autistic to because of falling down a flight of steps at 6mo. and the girl treats him like dirt beneath her feet.I think every person has the right to live, even if you know that that one person is going to be mentally special. The boy I know (not the one who fell down a flight of stairs) holds me in the highest respect that a friend can hold another one in because I'm his [I]ONLY[I] friend. So next time you are going to say the word [I]retarded[I], please think twice. People who are diferent than others do have feelings too.Not to mention that you might be where I am (not to gloat) in the eyes of that friend.Over and out. SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileWink

I don't know where you get that from. Some women are more naturally caring. But up until recently I wasn't planning to have any kids at all.

I would only abort the child if it was so extreme that it really would lead a horrible life that it doesn't deserve. I wouldn't want my child to be that way. I would keep it if it were only going to be mildly retarded or have a mild mental handicapped---in other words, eventually be able to take care of itself to some extent and be able to learn. But with a extreme disorder? I would abort it, for sure.

And I don't think there is ever a time when a woman isn't giving birth to a child. I know medicine is doing some crazy things but I don't think they've figured out how to let men bear the child.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about extremely retarded people. That is what egypt orginally wrote. Not kids with down syndrome, kids that can't do nothing for themselves...totally dependent on their parents and I don't know anyone who would want to have sex with someone who can't feed themselves or drowls all over them (not to be mean). I don' think the bank will give them a loan, and I'm pretty sure they can't leave normal lives. So, Why live?

I would not have the child aborted. Even though it would be much harder to care for a mentally challenged child, they still deserve a life. And with proper theraphy and classes, most can lead at least semi-normal lives. Which is better than no life at all in my humble opinion.

Y'all are getting the wrong image of mentally handicapped people. Yes, most mentally challenged people do learn slower then people who dont have have this disability, but that doesnt mean theyre going to be thirty-years old, sitting on the floor of their mom's house in a diaper, sucking their thumb. Y'all have drawn the totally wrong image of the handicapped in today's society. Mental Retardation (depending on the strength of the disease and will of the handicapped person) can be controlled and allows people to live semi-normal lives. BlkPanther, the mentally challenged can still get a job, have sex, own a car/house, and have kids. Yes, it depends on the disease, but I know many mentally handicapped people that still do all of the things you said they couldn't.

I think keeping a human alive even as a fleshbone machine is still much more admirable than seeking out the genetically unfortunate for termination, don't you?

If you're going to be that pessimistic about it, then I would hate to see you with kids. Parents of mentally challenged kids don't look at the down side of their child's condition, they're just happy their kid is alive. Mentally challenged kids do require more care, but do they deserve to die because they aren't like normal kids?

you can shove that in your pipe when you are changing the diper of a thirty year old autistic person with a pointed head that is drooling all over the bed.

I feel the same way. Having an autistic child is a life sentence...That's why I am having my tubes tied the second I get into college. If I want a child later on, I will adopt. There are too many children in the world anyway, who am I to bring another into the world where there are ones who are starving?

okay wow..(I cant find the right words) other than youre such a guy...and I feel sorry for you.

Astute observation. I am indeed a guy. Was it the facial hair? That usually trips people up. By the way, don't feel sorry for me. I don't take much stock in pity. Pity is weakness. Weakness is to be crushed. Go find some conservative weenie to pity.

Girls, besides not aborting a baby based on metal retardedness, also never fail to "aww" at a picture of a baby, whether it be human, cockatoo, or kitten. Obviously women are naturally more caring. Perhaps because they are the ones who bear child (in most cases). Guys are the hunters. They provide for the family (note, I'm going on traditional roles, not "politically correct" ones). Thus, a guy wouldn't want to have a "weakling" taking up living space and food. A woman wouldn't care either way. It's a baby. Babies are cute. Cute things are to be awwed at. Case closed.

The more you know, the less you don't know.
